The financial and operational challenges of maintaining such a unique site are very significant and faced with a major conservation and repair programme, the Cathedral Chapter is making a strategic step-change in the way it manages the care of its historic buildings.
September 2017 - December 2020
Charity information: Durham Cathedral
Durham Cathedral is responsible for the ongoing care and conservation of its buildings, woodlands and riverbanks. The financial and operational challenges of maintaining such a unique site are very significant and faced with a major conservation and repair programme.
Foundation 2020 aims to build and endowment of £10 million by 2020 to support the annual cycle of planned maintenance and repair of the Cathedral’s buildings to ensure they are safeguarded for future generations to enjoy. To kick start the campaign, the Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a grant of £1 million to the fund which is available to match donations we raise on a 1:1 basis, so every £1 donated is doubled.

What success will look like
Over the period of three years Durham Cathedral will monitor all donations which are made to the Foundation 2020 from both new and existing supporters and reaching our target.
Foundation 2020 will ensure the Cathedral will be able to continue its duty of care of these buildings by being able to draw down from this endowment fund on an annual basis to cover the annual general maintenance costs. General maintenance is vital to ensure an all over good duty of care to the building and works to avoid needing urgent repair, and major capital projects due to neglect.
Donor fatigue is always a risk for our organisation, as is the donor demographic of the north east and capacity of our marketing team to ensure the timely communication of the campaign and marketing messages. We have given a 12 month period of rest and stewardship in between the launch of this campaign and the completion of our last, and have undertaken training and hired new staff in order to drive communication and support the promotion of this campaign.
There is a stewardship strategy in place to communicate with prospective, existing and new donors to the campaign. This will cover direct mail, e-communications, social media and digital communication platforms. All information about the income and outcomes will be published in our annual magazine
