Building Brighter Futures in Zambia

Our big idea is to help young people to work their way out of poverty. By 2021 we want to double our investment in Zambia and train 460 young Zambians in construction skills each year.

  • Need

Zambia is a poor country with 64% of the population living below the poverty line, with no regular income. Skills training is only available for 10% of young people leaving school despite a chronic shortage of skills in the building sector. With 65% of the population under the age of 24 there are many motivated and energetic young people desperate for the opportunity to build a brighter future for themselves and their family.

Build It International focuses on providing opportunities for young men and women and their communities to work their way out of poverty. We train builders, and have pioneered a simple and highly effective model in Zambia which is enabling hundreds of unemployed young people to learn essential building skills, and at the same time help to build vital schools and clinics for thousands of children.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To train 2 cohorts of 20 unemployed young men and women in painting, bricklaying or carpentry skills

» To recruit and train 40 young men and women into our Training into Work programme at our training centre in Zambia.

    What success will look like

We will recruit 40 young people and demonstrate success by achieving 95% course completion rate and 95% pass rate, with graduates securing relevant paid work within 6 months

  • Impact

Gaining a technical skill, life skills and work experience will enable unemployed young men and women to earn a decent living and provide for their families. Over 5 years we expect 75% graduates to be active with incomes at or above sector rates, and living above the national poverty level.

A risk is that we are unable to place all the trainees in work experience placements. We have recruited a Commercial Relationships Manager in Zambia, Clayton Kachamba, to build relationships with local construction and building companies to ensure we are able to give all our trainees work experience in the commercial environment during their training.

We will report on progress to our donors with twice yearly reports, and share these in our annual report, through our website and social media channels.
