Refurbishment of room within Childrens Hospital
This project involves the refurbishment of a room within the Childrens Hospital at the University Hospital of Wales to enable better dialysis provision and more comfortable surroundings for the patients and their families.
December 2017 - June 2018
Charity information: Kidney Wales
The dialysis unit within the childrens hospital on Pelican Ward does not provide sufficient space ordinarily found in other Hospitals. The unit in itself isn't as child friendly and as welcoming to the children as it could be which we would like to change.
At Kidney Wales we plan to solve the above by extending the unit by occupying the room adjacent to the unit, then more space will become available and adaptations will be made to make the unit more child friendly as patients will be spending 4-6 hours a day, 3-4 days a week at this unit. This project will improve the lives of patients visiting the unit regularly.
Improve the experience and treatment for children at the dialysis unit at the Childrens Hospital
Activities» Refurbish this unit to ensure the space is utilised in the best possible way, and to make the facility more child friendly by providing entertainment
What success will look like
We will monitor the use of the unit once the refurbishment has been done to ensure the unit being used for dialysis treatment to it's full. capacity.
This refurbishment will improve the experience they receive when visiting the unit for their treatment. It will be a more welcoming and child friendly facility. It will also allow the unit to work to it's full capacity. This will be demonstrated and monitored through the unit staff at the Childrens Hospital.
The only risk that was identified was the possibility the Childrens Hospital could turn down the application for this refurbishment. Fortunately the team are fully on board and see the benefits of this project taking pace.
Donors will be sent a thank you letter once the refurbishment has been completed, and will be updated throughout the process via email on the developments of the process. Photographs will be provided.

We have supported the Kidney Wales Childrens Centre within the hospital with refurbishments and staffing. We led an 8 year campaign for the change of law on Organ donation in Wales which was passed in December 2015.
