Embu education project, Kenya

To change the mindsets and motivation of teachers and improve their skill and understanding in connected with a child centred brain through the Lead Now programme. Teachers then integrate the principles in their teaching to unlocking the potential of the children they teach.

  • Need


    Low quality and unmotivated teachers result in low levels of engagement in the classroom. This results in high absenteeism at school because children don't see the value in investing in themselves and are not engaged in the classroom.
    Because there is not a positive environment there is low levels of empathy resulting in challenging behaviour & bullying. This adds to problem of motivating children to attend.


    Phase 1: 150 teachers form Embu county, Kenya will be taken through Leadership for Life - a programme with a proven track record in giving people the mindsets, motivation and skills to flourish in teaching and in life.
    Phase 2: 15 teachers from 15 schools will be equipped to then impart these same principles to 10000 children by being trained to integrate the Lead Now programme into the school curriculum creating an increase in empathy, self worth and academic achievement

    Evaluate levels of empathy, self-worth and achievements of the children using a proven data recording process

    » Teachers motivated and inspired to see the potential in children and understand how to unlock it
    » Children's empathy and self worth increase leading to improved attendance, better engagement in the classroom, lower incidents between pupils

    What success will look like

    Measure levels of empathy between pupils, the levels of incidents and the levels of absenteeism

  • Impact


    Sustainable change in the approach and attitudes of teachers, bringing transformational change to the environment of the school and classrooms. Children achieving low levels of attainment will improve both academic and social skills at school and at home. They will be given life skills that are transferable into every area of life and continue to positively impact the students life in the future. This will be demonstrated by later evaluating the project in 3 and six months after the conclusion


    If head-teachers don't give the support of teachers being trained then they are neither released nor enabled to incorporate. Therefore there has been a presentation explaining the project, it benefits and impact to all head teachers. Therefore schools opting in do so because the head teacher is fully supportive


    Reports will be produced at the end of each Phase and stories of transformation change and impact fed back throughout the project duration.
    Photos will be taken & testimonies recorded.
    A full data analysis will also be produced of empathy, self-worth and academic achievements.

  • Background


    Embu County lies 120 km north east of Nairobi, Kenya. Embu is in the wider Mt Kenya region and is made up of both good agricultural land and also some very arid areas. As of 2013, there are 450 primary schools serving 125,420 students with a ratio of


    Some of the urban schools are in slum areas so we have vulnerable communities in both rural and urban places.
    150 teachers from the schools in the Embu County Region. 15 teachers trained to share Lead Now. 15 schools who will be part of the project and the
    10000 pupils whose lives will directly be impacted. In addition there will will a wider indirect impact on families and communities.

    Why Us?

    We have a team in Kenya who have benefitted from the impact of the programmes and now are trainers themselves. They have now trained over 14000 people across Kenya and have the experience and knowledge to create transformational impact. They have the relationship already in place with teachers and schools in Embu County with a buy in for the project. They are able to monitor and support the ongoing story.
