  • Need

Social isolation, poverty, lack of access to services and social support. In 2015 Hackney was ranked the 11th most deprived local authority in England. Evidence published in the local authority index of deprivation statistics showed a correlation between social, economic and environmental disadvantage and poor health. We aim to have a positive impact on local people’s lives, and well being by increasing health awareness and creating real opportunities for meaningful social interaction.

Wayside Community Centre will deliver a programme of Health and social activities to educate individuals on the effects of mental ill health. The project will give individuals suffering this illness the opportunity to get socially connected. We will create a space where they can come, meet other like minded people and share in story telling, laughter, and take part in other fun activities such as zumba fitness,Chair exercise, group discussions and Art & Craft.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To get clients mentally and socially active enabling them to improve their health and wellbeing.

» Away day trips to places of interest to reduce the risk of social isolation and benefit their physical, social and mental well being.
» 3 x Health & fitness classes per week to get clients physically, mentally and socially active enabling them to improve their health and wellbeing.
» Art & craft to help clients improve cognition and memory and broadened the horizons of some of the most dis- advantaged individuals in our community

    What success will look like

Success will be seen by the numbers of individuals whose lives has been transformed and are now equipped to manage their health and well being independently.

  • Impact

The project will bring about confidence and independence to return to society.
Lessen the numbers of people entering hospitals.
Enable a more active lifestyle to develop friendships and reduce
    the risks of social isolation.
We will demonstrate the success of the project by monitoring the numbers of people who are more socially connected and getting more involve in the community and taking positive steps to remain mentally connected.

The risk is that people may drop out periodically and numbers of attendances decrease. We have dealt with this risk by putting policies in place to keep in touch with users of the service by letter / telephone. We also regularly advertise in Hackney Today a local free paper published through the Local authority and distributed house to house around the borough. We also promote our services on social media so that more people could be informed about the project.

Doners will be informed on the success of the project when it is completed through a written report . Additionally they will be informed about any setbacks or changes that may have occur during the life of the project.

  • Background

Our project is located in Hackney one of the most deprived Boroughs in the country. This is an area of great need where people are poor, often separated from their families and living alone, with little to do, almost no human contact or support. Emotional and Mental health are under great strain and physical ill health or lack of mobility often compound the problem. Many of our members have nowhere else to go when they turn to us for help.

Older people living in Hackney particularly the poorest, most excluded and isolated among them and those who have or are at risk of developing mental ill health will benefit. Given our target area and beneficiaries we anticipate we will particularly draw in the majority of people from African and Caribbean descent who are living alone. People prone to Mental distress will have the opportunity to socialise and develop friendships whilst looking after their health.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We have successfully provided services to this under-privilege community for over 26 years. We are a listening organisation. As the founder I have also suffered mental stress and know what it is like to feel lost, helpless and without hope, having nowhere to turn for support to help me in my distress. Over the years we have received numerous feedback of customer satisfaction and improvements in health through the passion and dedication given towards caring for this client group.
