More children in Kenya and Uganda are attending secondary school than ever before - but in rural communities many poor students face barriers to realising their potential. Providing high quality education in local schools is key to unlocking opportunity. However, lack of funds means that many schools struggle to provide the resources, learning environment and pastoral support that enables students to overcome challenges and flourish.
We invest in the foundations of a quality education: key learning resources, a stimulating environment and support for student welfare. We work closely with each school’s management to develop a bespoke programme of investment that is owned by that community. We believe that education goes beyond exam results, and focus on projects with the potential to make a long-term impact on the life opportunities of students.
Facilitating Learning: improving student’s opportunities to gain qualifications, skills, experience
Activities» Creating a school library with a pleasant, inspiring and productive learning environment with space and opportunity for private study
» Equipping the school laboratory with sufficient and appropriate learning resources, including textbooks, and equipment.
We will monitor school enrolment and KCSE/A-level results. We will also seek feedback from Head Teachers and Students about their experiences learning and teaching.
Improving Health: equipping students with knowledge, attitudes and facilities.

» Producing materials to address health issues in the school and community.
Where we have established relationship with local health providers we will follow up with schools to ensure that local health practitioners continue to visit the school.

We monitor student enrolment and support from the local community in the form of engagement in the Parent Teacher Association and financial donations.

We monitor both drop-out and completion rates and carry out surveys to measure student and parent satisfaction.
We believe that delivering good education is not possible without basic resources such as books to read or equipment to carry out simple experiments. But a good school offers much more than just good resources, and we appreciate that a holistic approach is essential. We draw on the knowledge and expertise of the school management, staff, students and the wider community to make sure that we focus on what is really needed and that our interventions are sustainable.
In Kenya and Uganda there is a growing possibility of changes to to the syllabus as well as to school structures.
Our model is dynamic can adapt to changes in syllabus and structure. We routinely maintain a close eye on any changes and incorporate these into our training programme.
We record detailed information on the progress of our project in each of our partner schools for the purposes of monitoring and evaluating our impact. We will use this information to provide case studies of our impact, supplemented by photographs and some video footage.

Over the last 20 years our efforts have been focused on the Kisii region of southwest Kenya. In 2011 we began expanding, firstly to Kakamega, western Kenya, and in 2013 to Mbarara in western Uganda. We are looking to expand to a fourth site in Iganga, Uganda, in the coming years, whilst also focusing on reaching more schools in our three current sites.
We work in partnership with a number of schools in Kenya and Uganda, to improve the quality of education that they provide to their students, who are the ultimate beneficiaries of our programme.
We make an impact. EPAfrica has been working in East Africa for 25 years and over that time have invested hundreds of thousands of pounds in our partner schools, making a tangible difference to generations of students. Our use of volunteers means that our overheads are very low, leaving more money to go to our core work. Sending volunteers as well as funds enables us to develop a holistic and bespoke programme of investment, tailored to the schools' unique context, ambitions and needs.

I do not know what word to use to describe it…. Incredible really. There was constant commitment, leading to a huge number of influential changes within my school – lab equipment, text books, even infrastructure.
