High Tide Sustainability Project
Our aim is to improve learning and employment opportunities whilst raising aspirations for young people across Teesside through our unique work experience and industry-led skills programmes.

Charity information: The High Tide Foundation
North East of England has a crisis with youth unemployment and in particular Teesside. We work with young people who are 3rd or 4th generation unemployed,they grow up around constant statements from adults such as ‘there are no jobs around here’. This issue is enforced by negative media on a national level. It has been stated in national press and reports that Middlesbrough is one of the most deprived areas in the UK with one of the highest rates for unemployment.
We have been in operation for 5 years and provided programmes for 13 - 19 year old's and would now like to grow the foundation and provide career opportunities and guidance to children throughout the whole of secondary and further education. These opportunities are so important to raise aspirations, support career choices with young people and also prepare them for the work place. Our programmes help link our local education with our business community and enable them to support each other.
Continue to provide career opportunities for young people across Tees Valley
Activities» We offer a number of different programmes for young people to improve their skills and knowledge to the world of work such as work experience.
» Alongside our flagship programmes we also provide extra workshops to help tackle certain barriers that young people face and educate them on careers.
» One of the first experiences was providing young people with a River Trip, this introduced them to the port and sparked their initial interest.
» Build the links between the business community and world of education to allow them to support each other.
What success will look like
We will demonstrate success via the numbers of young people attending one of our programmes or experiences. The value in these opportunities will be monitored through the feedback
Develop employability skills for young people along with a wider knowledge of careers
Activities» We wanted to allow students to gain extra qualifications that are better suited to their skills. We now have a number of projects accredited
» References are a very important part of a CV & we support the work experience students to gain a good reference from their placements.
» Provide career workshops within the local schools so business members can discuss what their role really involves and what their sector is like.
» Develop materials for the schools which will provide the students with up-to-date and accurate information about a wide range of sectors and roles.
What success will look like
This will be demonstrated through the students experiences which we will measure alongside the Gatsby Benchmarks to ensure it is meaningful.
Raise aspirations for young people
Activities» Run sessions for CEO’s to sit with a group of young people to have an informal discussion about employment where students can speak openly
» Provide a number of life-changing experiences such as Port to Port visits with local and over-seas ports which raise aspiration levels
» We have our older students who have worked with us for a while & have a great success story to tell, we use these students to share this with others
» We support the young people to their individual needs, we praise them and help to build confidence. This is crucial when raising their aspirations.
What success will look like
Feedback questionnaire comparison from the beginning of programme to the end of the programme to investigate whether answers are more positive and aspirations have improved
Ensure career guidance is available from secondary school for all Children across Tees Valley.
Activities» Create new workshops in which we introduce a new level to our programmes so this will allow us something to offer for every year group.
» Create new opportunities for Year 7 & 8 students which will encourage them to start developing their knowledge of careers.
What success will look like
The additional opportunities for the younger stages will ensure that career provision is offered to all students, this can be monitored through registration forms.
We will record the numbers of students that go into further education or employment that have taken part in a High Tide programme.
Showcasing the employment opportunities throughout our avenues
High Tide will record feedback from the students taking part in opportunities and will follow their progress every 6 months to record their success and determine if High Tide had a direct impact
As we aim to raise aspirations in the hope of encouraging people to gain employment a risk to our work is problems and issues that businesses may face that will create negative media. Teesside's steel industry closed which affected over 2,000 families. It created a negative attitude towards local employment with many stating 'there are no jobs on Teesside' we now focus on the sectors that are thriving in the area to show students that we still have plenty of opportunity on our doorstep
As the members are very engaged in the delivery of the programmes we often run members events which will be a good way to report to donors. We will also use our social media and online activity to report back and our monthly newsletter that will be sent to all donors email addresses.

Tees Valley is made up from the local towns Redcar, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Hartlepool. Teesside was developed due to the find of Iron Ore, this started the heavy industry that the residents would come to rely on. The first steel plant was opened in 1875 and this industry provided employment for a huge number of Teesside families until 2015 when the blast furnace was closed. Teesside now suffers from a large number of unemployment and also has a high rate of zero hour contracts.
There are a number of people who will benefit from the High Tide Programmes. The students will benefit directly from being involved they will gain the skills and build the contacts with employers. The local businesses involved will also benefit from the programmes as this will give them access to potential employees and also the opportunity to promote their business. Teachers who have chaperoned the students have also said they have learnt a lot and we also engage with parents and siblings
High Tide has spent time creating great relationships with both schools and businesses in order to be successful with the programmes. Lots of charities and organisations have good relationships with businesses OR schools but it is difficult to have both. High Tide has been approached by charities in London and Liverpool for advice on how to gain support from both businesses and schools which demonstrates how unique we are. We are a maritime charity who focuses on the local business community.

General Manager High Tide, Lauren is a local woman who has been involved in High Tide from the start.
Project Coordinator High Tide, Leonie is responsible for the delivery of the programmes by doing interviews, planning and attending the sessions
Bev is a local teacher who fully supports High Tide and is a great ambassador to encourage other schools to be engaged with the charity.
Trustee of High Tide, Mark is very engaged with attending events to celebrate with the young people and he also takes an active role in fundraising
