Health & Longevity in Manchester

To create opportunities for as many people as we can, in Manchester, to improve their physical, mental & emotional health. We want to provide weekly & bi-weekly classes, as well as workshops and drop-in sessions so that people can learn and sustain considerable improvements in their lifestyles.

  • Need


    According to the Adults & Older People's JSNA, life expectancy at birth in Manchester is lower than for the North West & England, with residents spending a greater proportion of their lives in ill health.
    Many factors are implicated in lower life expectancy including: diet & exercise, stress, smoking & alcohol consumption.
    Healthy life expectancy was 56 years for Males & 54 for Females in 2012-14, indicating that poor health is likely to begin well before retirement - well below the UK average


    We want to encourage older adults to adopt healthy lifestyle habits that will support them in maintaining their health throughout their lives - even into retirement - before it is too late for them.
    This project aims to develop, promote & deliver classes, workshops and online content, partnering with other local strategies and joined up thinking.

    Aim 1

    To get more older people from Manchester engaged in increased physical activity


    » Chinese exercise focusing on mindfulness, meditation, relaxation techniques, deep breathing, and posture.
    » More vigorous Chinese exercise to increase fitness, lose weight, help combat health conditions, improve mood, boost energy and improve sleep.
    » Provide interactive online resources via social media, and websites, providing tips and ideas, motivation, home routines, recipes.

    What success will look like

    By engaging with at least 100 individuals, who will attend physical sessions and workshops

  • Impact


    A number of health-related changes will occur, including: weight loss; improved sleep; reduced stress; calmer emotions; understanding of risk factors to health; increased fitness; ability to self-assess circumstances; improved relationships; re-engagement with & joy of learning; increased social confidence; improved flexibility; improved balance & co-ordination.
    We use online questionnaires, feedback/reviews on social media, video interviews and individual case studies to demonstrate success.


    There is a risk that we won't be able to attract enough people to the project. We have developed, over the last two years, a highly successful strategy, using previous funding, of promotion using online ads & special offers targeted at specific people.
    The most important risk relates to health & safety. All voluntary staff engaging with participants have considerable experience, as well as being trained in risk assessment, safe coaching techniques, and first aid.


    Donors who wish to be contacted will receive a copy of our Trustees Annual Report. We will gladly provide updates on any specific project they have donated to through newsletters, our website and social media sites and by personal correspondence if required. We will demonstrate value for money.

  • Background


    The project will be delivered in 4 locations across Manchester and Salford, providing access to a large number of older adults (55+).
    There has been considerable interest with previous projects we have successfully delivered in these areas. The response is good, retention and engagement has been high.


    Older adults, primarily aged 55 and above in the Greater Manchester area. Predominantly those with low levels of regular physical activity, from more deprived areas, poor diets, possibly with existing health problems.

    Manchester Lishi Arts has been running health related Lishi projects for adults since the 1990s with funding from Awards for All, GreaterSport and others. The teachers for Manchester Lishi Arts are very experienced and qualified.
