Shepherds View Kennels

Our project will encompass the build of 3 stables, a tack room & sales room. This will enable the rescue to keep their rescue animals on land and allow greater access when working with vulnerable adults who love to work with the dogs

  • Need


    Ability to house more abused and abandoned dogs without increasing costs
    Also improve accessibility to work with vulnerable adults instead of being stuck to commercial kennel opening hours


    Kennels will be on Charity's own leased land and therefore in complete charge of when and how people can visit.
    It will also provide a shop facility to provide work experience for both unemployed volunteers and adults with learning difficulties

    Aim 1

    To build appropriate housing facilities to rescue more abused/stray dogs without increased costs


    » Project Manage the building of the new facilities & pound

    Management Information will provide a comparison on the number of animals rescues & the cost per animal compared to previous years.

    Aim 2

    To provide onsite facilities &access to work with vulnerable adults bringing dogs & people together


    » Provide a planned weekly activity schedule and liaise with local services to identify appropriate candidates for the scheme

    Monthly meetings with the various organisation and one-one meetings with individuals to identify the benefits they receive. Number of uptake on the scheme

    To offer an onsite Pet Shop at reasonable prices to increase income to the charity

    Management Information regarding income & expenditure & profitability v input time. Also the benefit to individuals gained from work experience

  • Impact


    The project will benefit the rescue & community by:
    Increasing the number of stray animals the rescue can take
    Providing regular access and training to individuals who want to work with dogs and get a proven value from being with them
    Ease of viewing access for animals looking for homes for potential adopters as not restricted to commercial kennel opening hours
    Increase income to the charity from an onsite shop which also provides work experience to long term unemployed/those with learning issue

    Fund raising events have been ongoing throughout the year to raise sufficient funds to start the project
    Research has been undertaken to identify people who are willing to work on the the project when it commences. Recruitment will be ongoing


    Regular monthly updates until the project is completed followed by quarterly newsletters and social media

      £1,200 Insulation Insulation of each stable to ensure suitable for dogs - non chew and ease of cleaning

  • Background


    The kennels will be built at Shepherds View, St. Giles, Torrington. EX38 7JU which is the current location of the charity.
    The charity has been granted a 25 year lease on the land.


    The charity will benefit as indicated earlier from increased activity without increase costs.
    The community will benefit as the charity will be able to help more people either by taking in their dogs or providing training .
    An identified audience of long term unemployed & vulnerable adults will benefit from having both a social outlet & gaining valuable life skills and work experience
