    Need

After eight years our kitchen is dilapidated and in urgent need of repair/ reform. For a number of months the cooks have had to revert to using open fires and charcoal for part of the cooking process. Certain items cannot be used due to safety issues. Tiles are broken, pipes have been leaking and held together by cloth. There are constant on-going issues.

Recently, both our ovens as well as our industrial size fridge broke and the situation reached crisis point.

    Solution

It would not only save us cost in terms of utilities (our current fridge has been consuming electricity way above average and our oven is also very cost inefficient and seems unrepairable). However, a new kitchen will mean we can provide proper facilities for our cooks and clean and hygienic food can be prepared for our students. Furthermore we can start to provide food again to the local people at the homeless shelter which for us is a huge priority.

  • Impact

    Impact

Our great success is that we already have 55 students who have been with us through high school and university and are now starting their careers assisting Ethiopia in its progress towards development. To date we have helped 11 individuals who are now fully qualified medical doctors and 36 individuals who are in the engineering field, the remainder have qualified in accountancy, economics, pharmacy and architecture.

EEF has an outstanding record - 100% university acceptance.

    Risk

    - The very heavy rainy season in Addis Ababa is from July to September. This makes any building work near impossible in that period.
    - Local issues – dealing with the local work culture can often be challenging
    - Inflation – constantly increasing cost of building materials.
