Youth Circus Community Bursaries
We believe in the power of circus to transform the lives of some of the most vulnerable youth in our society. Our youth circus bursaries will target 8 – 14 year olds from Cardiff and its wider areas. We specifically target the Communities First areas, due to their high level of deprivation.
January 2018 - December 2018
Charity information: Nofit State Community Circus
Across Wales, the wards that face highest levels of deprivation are designated as Communities First areas. These communities face multiple challenges such as mental health issues, anxiety, high levels of obesity, heart disease and diabetes along with poverty of opportunity. Children who face these issues struggle to engage with their peers, finding school isolating.
We devised our youth circus bursary programme to open up access to the highest quality circus provision, through our youth circus programme, to young people with additional needs, financial hardship and mental health issues such as autism, sensory process disorder, ADHD and anxiety. Our bursary programme offers them the opportunity to engage in a safe and inclusive environment where they can play, learn and develop the coping strategies they need to thrive in life.

NoFit State was founded 30 years ago in the STAR Communities First area of Cardiff; (A)damsdown, accessible from (S)plott, (T)remorfa and (R)oath. In 2014 we redeveloped Four Elms, a grade II listed church building in Adamsdown, creating the first permanent dedicated circus space in Wales. With home base still in this area and strong links in the local community we are all too aware of the multiple challenges that the children and young people of the Communities First areas face.
Our Youth Circus bursaries are designed to offer children and young people from Cardiff and the wider areas an opportunity to engage in creative physical activity, supporting their ability to focus and express themselves in a safe and fun environment. As part of our programme they join the NoFit State family where our ethos of co-operation, not competition, means they improve their physical health, challenge themselves mentally, build their confidence, improving their outlook on life.
As the UK's leading contemporary circus company our charity works through three interconnected strands: internationally renowned circus touring productions; large scale outdoor community engagement projects and performances; professional development training programmes.
At the heart of all that we do is our year round community training programme. We run community circus classes 7 days a week for people aged 5 – 70+ years old, engaging with over 250 children, young people and adults a week.
