An exciting new space and a wide range of weekly activities for vulnerable and disadvantaged families and young people in South Westminster. We want to bring the community together to help people overcome the barriers they face due to insecure housing and low income.

    Need

    The Cardinal Hume Centre is located next to one of the most deprived areas in London, with child poverty as high as 60% according to recent estimates. Low income families living in overcrowded and temporary accommodation struggle with day to day necessities, and children of all ages suffer the consequences. Their schoolwork is impacted by home situations, they can't take advantage of opportunities for extra-curricular work and face barriers to development socially, creatively and educationally.

    Solution

    We will renovate the ground floor of our building to create a new collaborative space for young people aged 0-19 and their families - with a green outdoor area, a digital zone, and private facilities for one to one work. The new space will be flexible and open, with easy access for those with mobility issues. Every week we will run a wide range of activities designed for different age groups to work together, bringing in specialists partners to offer exciting opportunities for young people.

    Aim 1

    Create a new space for 100+ families and young people aged 0-19 to come together and learn per year

    » Carry out development and renovation work on the ground floor to create a flexible facility, with private meeting areas and outdoor green space

    Evaluation of the new build space after 6 months, including number of people participating per month.


    Aim 2

    Provide opportunities for 10+ local children, families and young people to learn and grow per week

    » Run a timetable of activities every week aimed at specific age groups, such as homework clubs, arts and crafts, morning stay & play sessions

    Creation and deployment of a timetable of activities in the new space, and numbers of children and young people attending sessions, with up to 10 participants a week

  • Impact

    Impact

    Over the long term, the project will give disadvantaged children and young people a stable and welcoming facility where they can socialise, learn and develop new skills in a supportive environment. This will aid them as they grow up, and means they will not miss out on crucial development goals compared to their peers, due to their home situation. Furthermore, working with the whole family will help address that home situation, leading to improved housing security in the long term.

    Risk

    Risk 1 - Renovation and building. There are multiple accepted risks when undertaking building work, and these are categorised and managed on our risk register and mitigated through contractual agreements and project oversight.

    Risk 2 - Participation. There are risks to both under- and over- subscription of the offered activities, and we will work with partners such as schools to identify local families most in need in order to mitigate this risk. We will also carry out needs assessments.

    Reporting

    Ongoing communication will be provided to donors through case studies on our website every month, and through two print magazines that detail the progress of projects and the people using them. We will send these out via mail and email depending on donor preference.

  • Background

    Location

    St James's council Ward profile, where the Centre is based, shows that 62% of children aged less than 11 yrs were failing to achieve a good level of development in the last review.

    93% of beneficiaries coming to the Centre rely on some sort of state support, with 39% relying entirely on welfare to survive. Only 23% of those visiting for the first time last year were UK nationals, and migrants make up a large part of the local demographics.

    Beneficiaries

    Children and young people aged 0-19 years living in local temporary and social housing, attending local schools.

    Families on low income (below the poverty line), in workless households and where the primary language is not English.

    Why Us?

    The Cardinal Hume Centre has a 30 year history of helping the most vulnerable families locally with housing, employment and legal issues. We have been providing childcare and residential services for children and young people aged 0-21 for that time, with great success over the years. We are trusted by the local community and able to bring in many partner organisations to help local families and children reach their potential. We also own a fantastic space on which to develop this new project
