Enhancing Employability, Empowering Township Youth
Limited by a lack of exposure to the world of work, young adults from township communities are thwarted in their efforts to engage in meaningful work. We focus on developing the hard & soft skills to overcome these lacks and provide access to work experience & job placement for positive futures.

Youth unemployment rates in South Africa average ~51% and pose a significant risk to prosperity & stability in both the short and long-term. Sadly even educated youth are largely unemployable, lacking practical experience & professional skills. “There is no more important group than young people whose social and economic distance from the mainstream means they cannot participate fully as citizens... By developing their ability, we can build ... strong leaders grounded in local realities”
The YSDP is designed to address the high rate of youth unemployment, by bridging the gap between job seekers’ current employment skills and the skill-sets necessary for available job opportunities. We do this by:
- Providing relevant job training & education opportunities
- Delivering social & health services to the youth
- Developing partnerships with public and private sector organisations
- Maintaining a national jobs database & Supporting youth in job placements
Enhance employability by developing both hard & soft skills & by providing real-life work experience
Activities» To establish professional competence in youth through academic training, experiential learning, and personal management skills.
» Research & design programme curriculum that aligns with employer needs and offer training programmes to job seeking youth in township communities
Increased percentage of youth achieving successful decent employment on completion of Youth Skills Development Programme
Provide career guidance & exposure to career paths to help youth make the best choices
Activities» Facilitate engagement with career guidance programmes that enable youth to understand their aptitudes and interests and be position for work success
» To collaborate with private sector employers to maintain knowledge of current employment needs and opportunities today and into the future
» Deliver blended learning solutions by incorporating digital, online and face to face training

Youth successfully engage in meaningful work experience and retrain employment for the duration of their contract
The YSDP will have a long-term impact, as the skills training provides a solid foundation for long-term employment & economic self-sufficiency. The programme meets the demands of the South African employment market by instilling relevant skills & creating job opportunities for students, through the placement program. Additionally, our existing corporate partners have provided opportunities for our trained youth, contributing towards the success of the program and ensuring its sustainability.
Businesses can be reluctant to provide opportunities to ungraduated, unskilled or developing skilled youth due to the managerial input required to assist and develop them. Afrika Tikkun provides a high level of psychosocial and professional support to each young person on the programme to mitigate potential problems. Both the workplace and the young person can bring problems to their designated Afrika Tikkun mentor.
Donors signing up for reports will receive quarterly email updates detailing youth performance in the programme including: pass rate, dropout rate (and reason), job placements and case studies. A detailed year-end analysis will consider programme performance overall & refinements if necessary.

South Africa has the highest inequality rate in the world. At the same time, unemployment and unemployability levels are exceedingly high. According to StatsSA, youth aged 15 – 34 make up most of the unemployed with 67%+ not having jobs. A lack of work experience has also resulted in low levels of employability. Our research agrees with National Policy that states “youth-targeted interventions are needed to enable young South Africans to actively participate & engage in society & the economy."
Young township women on average only access meaningful employment at age 29; young men at age 27. Young black township youth between the ages of 18 and 35 are the focus of benefit from our YSDP. They come from impoverished communities, live in low income households adequate skills training or career guidance and so are least likely to gain employment. Beneficiaries are identified through community engagement and will be motivated to create change within themselves and their communities.
Afrika Tikkun is an award-winning NGO with Nelson Mandela as Chief Patron and has been working in South Africa for over 20 years. We work with partners to provide a Cradle to Career holistic development model for children and young people between the ages of 0 and 25. The experience we’ve gained over 20 years will be used to successfully enhance the programme and increase the number of learners.
