British Engagement Project for Displaced Children seeks to enhance understanding of British values, culture, and history through a professionally developed non-informal curricula designed for displaced (i.e. asylum seekers, refugees, forced migrants) families children, aged between 11-15.

  • Need

    Need

    As the influx of families have been reported widely both by governmental statistics and the media, displaced families including asylum seekers, refugees, and forced migration have been on the rise. An integral part of living in Britain and an issue which has been presented to be a pivotal part of their adaptation, has been integration, especially for children. This includes the biggest challenge faced by society and the educational system: the personal development of the children in question.

    Solution

    The project seeks to eliminate barriers in attaining knowledge, experience and opportunities for children of displaced families by creating a bespoke programme of cultural and educational activities to integrate these children into British society. This tailored programmes, conducted within term holidays and with selected mentors from these communities seeks to alleviate pressure from families and the educational system by enhancing displaced children with greater understanding of Britain.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    To create cultural and historical awareness/understanding of British society and values.

    Activities

    » The project will coordinate event days, including visits to the Parliament, museums with a thematic tone, galleries and one-to-one mentor support.
    » Organise training and seminars. we aim to focus on issues/topics to help children better understand and engage with local communities.
    » To have field trips otherwise inaccessible due to financial restraints, and empower their sense of belonging and British citizenship.

    The children will be informally assessed, with report cards written out after the project weeks to demonstrate their learning progress and how they can improve themselves.


    Aim 2

    To facilitate a non-formal learning environment for diversity, acceptance and tolerance

    Activities

    » Introducing interactive learning sessions, conducted in small groups of children with a professionally develop curricula with bespoke activities
    » Conducting workshops will be themed and planned in accordance with mentors from the community and educational specialists from an ESL background

    The children will be informally assessed, with report cards written from mentors supervising their progress with one-to-one support to evaluate their learning progress.


  • Impact

    Impact

    Children will garner a sense of confidence, purpose, heightened understanding of British society and most of all, accessibility to experience and opportunities otherwise unavailable within the formal education system. BIP aims to build long term influence the children and how they view a society in which they will socially, culturally and economically contribute towards. After the first cycle, the children will be monitored and tracked, with regular interaction and communication

    Risk

    As displaced families are a broad category and many families fall within this remit, the risk of approaching a very isolated and conservative community bares the risk of further alienation all together. To help eliminate this risk, we will be recruiting mentors and established young people (mainly older siblings/longstanding individuals within the community) to communicate the project, and increase our chances to access these families.

    Reporting

    The project reports will be produced within the term, which will give us the opportunity to write up the progress of the children and how best to shape the next events depending on feedback and support. There will also be an annual report at the end of the school year.

  • Background

    Location

    The location of the project will be set in Greater London as most displaced families are within the capital, and as LCSS are based in the heart of London reaching families will become easier.

    Beneficiaries

    The beneficiaries of this project are children, aged 11-15, whom are displaced due to a plethora of reasons (social, financial, political reasons) and are finding difficulty to integrate within British society.

    Why Us?

    At LCSS, we believe every child should have a chance to learn, develop & appreciate what British society has to offer. This can be seen from our current project ‘Count-Art’, in helping young Muslim girls counter extremist thoughts with art. The Big Lottery Fund promoted project ‘Raising Expectations’ on helping young people aspire towards higher education. LCSS have been at the forefront in community projects,and have established & experienced staff to carry out this project successfully.
