Feeding the Hungry this Christmas
FareShare redistributes surplus food that would otherwise go to waste to 6,723 frontline community groups that support vulnerable people. Whether homeless hostels or children's breakfast clubs, these organisations turn good, in date surplus food into nutritious meals for the people who need it.

8.4 million people in the UK struggle to put food on the table. More people are turning to the voluntary sector to access healthy food. This is putting small charities under immense pressure as they struggle in the wake of statutory funding cuts. In the UK the food & drink industry wastes at least 270,000 tonnes of edible surplus food annually. This is enough for 650 million meals that could be redistributed to charities to feed hungry people. Instead, a lot of the food is dumped in landfills.
FareShare works with retailers and suppliers to access their surplus food including fresh fruit and veg, meat and diary. FareShare has worked to deepen relationships with major retailers including ASDA and Tesco and particularly with their suppliers to increase the volume and variety of surplus food we receive. The organisations that receive FareShare food are supporting vulnerable people in society & the food provides a means for charities to engage to get to the cause of their clients hunger.

What success will look like
Retaining charity memberships, gaining positive feedback from member surveys and working to ensure funding is secured for development of our operation.
It will allow us to provide more vulnerable people across the UK with quality and nutritious food. Increased national recruitment of volunteers will provide more people with the chance to gain new skills & increased employability. We will demonstrate the success by monitoring the number of charities supported across each region and by reaching people in new areas where FareShare previously did not have a presence, as well as the number of new volunteers and training opportunities we can provide.
There is some risk involved with surplus food, including compliance with health and safety standards, and high risk food being distributed to vulnerable people. To combat this, we have a National Operations team who are responsible for upholding the very highest safety standards at all 21 of our Regional Centres. Centres are audited to ensure that food is transported safely and and use by dates are adhered to. We also audit every single charity member ensure they are using food safely.
Our main method of communication will be through Social Media channels. We will also send thank you e-mails to all donors and offer them the option of signing up to our newsletter. After the campaign, we will create a report detailing the amount of money raised and how many meals this equates to.

FareShare is based around the UK. FareShare has 20 regional centres including London, Merseyside and the West Midlands, all located in inner city areas with high levels of deprivation. We also have 21st regional centre about to open in Ipswich, to deliver surplus food to charities around East Anglia. This allows us to supply food to charities throughout the country.
FareShare's food benefits a wide range of disadvantaged people including people suffering from addictions or mental health problems, asylum seekers, homeless people and a growing number of children and young people. Our food feeds almost a quarter of a million people every week, who might otherwise go without. Children and young people are particularly vulnerable to hunger as this can have detrimental effects by altering behaviour, reducing educational attainment, and compromising development.
Over the last 23 years FareShare has grown from a homelessness project in London into an independent national charity . Over the years we have built secure and trusted relationships with over 450 food companies including Tesco, Waitrose and Moy Park & our team all have huge amounts of experience in the food industry. We have expanded exponentially over the last 23 years, with 21 regional centres where we are helping 6,723 charities providing food for just under 500,000 people every single week.
