  • Need

    Need

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease which affects the brain and spinal cord causing problems with muscle movement, balance and vision. There is no cure for MS and there are more than 100,000 people in the UK with the disease.

In East Kent alone, there are more than 2,000 people living with MS. The Kent MS Therapy Centre is a completely self funded charity and we would like to secure funding towards the subsidised element of providing Physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy sessions.

    Solution

Physiotherapy improves fitness, chronic fatigue, balance, posture and reduces muscle spasticity for those with MS.

Hydrotherapy enables people with MS who have mobility issues to move limbs in a hydrotherapy pool. These limbs are often difficult or impossible to move out of the water.

Providing Physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy sessions, can improve the physical health and enhance the quality of life for people with MS. Additional Physiotherapy sessions on Saturdays will reduce waiting lists.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide Physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy sessions for people living with MS in Kent.

    Activities

» Offer additional services of gym workout sessions tailored to those with MS and limited mobility plus group exercise, Pilates and APS.
» Offer 1 to 1 sessions with a trained neuro-physio during the week.
» Offer additional pool services as well as traditional neuro-physio hydrotherapy.
» Offer services such as supported swims, swimming lessons, water reiki and water yoga.

Success will be demonstrated through improved physical and emotional well-being of people living with MS through the provision of these services at the Centre.

  • Impact

    Impact

Increased membership of the Centre by people with MS who are interested in benefiting from Physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy sessions. In addition, we will demonstrate the success of the project by tracking the progress of members that use these specific services.

    Risk

There is a risk that there are more members requesting Physiotherapy sessions than spaces available. However we additional sessions on Saturdays should counteract this.

There is a risk that we won't receive enough funding to cover the cost of Hydrotherapy sessions five days per week. However, the Centre will continue to fundraise to ensure any shortfall can be met.

    Reporting

Donors to this project will receive a quarterly newsletter detailing the progress of this project.
