Pass it Forward - Puppets For All

Little Angel Theatre’s Puppets for All scheme provides free tickets to disadvantaged children and families so that they can experience the joy of theatre. We believe nobody should miss out on theatre or creative arts projects due to social or economic circumstances.

  • Need

LAT seeks to break down barriers to arts engagement. LAT is situated in Islington, a culturally diverse, socially and economically deprived inner city borough. It has the third highest level of child poverty in England. At least 50% of pupils in our surrounding primary schools have never visited LAT before and would not normally be able to due to financial and social barriers. Barriers include a lack of knowledge as to what theatre-going involves and a sense that the experience is ‘not for us'.

LAT is in a great position to take advantage of Islington’s polarisation by providing services for the wealthier members of the community, in order to provide for the less wealthy – and ultimately bridging this gap. By encouraging supporters to Pass it Forward, LAT can ensure that the opportunity to experience live puppetry theatre is accessible to all in our community. The projects also seeks to remove pre-conceptions about the theatre, demonstrating that it can be for everyone.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To work with local community organisations & schools to distribute 1200 free tickets

» LAT will develop existing relationships and grow new ones with local community organisations and schools who connect us with beneficiaries

    What success will look like

We will record the number of tickets given away, as well as the organisations through which they were distributed and the names of the beneficiaries in line with GDPR.

    Aim 2

To increase local engagement with children and families that could not otherwise afford to pay

» We will continue to develop our relationships with the scheme participants after they have attended a show

    What success will look like

As above. We consider the scheme a success if we engage new people & we place emphasis on re-engagement.

    Aim 3

To break down barriers to arts engagement

» By working closely with beneficiaries and local organisations to properly understand barriers to arts engagement & finding methods to overcome these

    What success will look like

Through beneficiaries questionnaires and by measuring levels of re-engagement.

    Aim 4

To fuel the imagination through the magic and wonder of puppetry

» By continuing LAT’s reputation of producing high-quality, innovative puppetry for children and families.

    What success will look like

LAT will collect feedback from beneficiaries through audience surveys, and through feedback from organisations and schools who connect us with target groups

  • Impact

Pass it Forward - Puppets For All will help LAT to broaden our audience base by engaging members of the community who previously may have felt, for varying reasons, that our work was inaccessible. We have a sophisticated box office database that can monitor our audience profiles, attendance and re-engagement in line with GDPR. Audience surveys effect what LAT produces and programmes. In welcoming the whole community to our venue, LAT hopes to stage work that is relevant to everyone.

Lack of engagement from partner organisations. People simply not wanting to engage with the arts – it’s not for us.
Our experienced Community Engagement Manager is dedicated to building relationships with community groups & local people. We deliberately partner with voluntary sector organisations who have the expertise to engage with specific groups.

Donors to this project will receive updates via their preferred contact method each season, detailing the progress of the project to date. Donors will be notified of any necessary changes that have been made to the project plans.

  • Background

LAT is situated in Islington, London’s most polarised borough which has the third highest level of child poverty in England – 32.4% as measured by children living in income deprived households. All Puppet for All tickets will go to beneficiaries living in Islington, and when appropriate neighbouring boroughs.

We work closely with Islington Council & over 40 local groups & charities; these networks help us identify individuals who would benefit most using the following criteria:
    - Families who would struggle to cover the cost of LAT charges
    - Refugee status families
    - Child with special needs/disabilities who would benefit from a live theatre experience (we offer ‘relaxed performances’ for audiences with certain needs)
    - Children who would not normally see live theatre due to social circumstances.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We are a unique theatre, one of only 3 puppet theatres in England. Puppetry is a highly accessible way to discover theatre and the arts, particularly for children, those with learning disabilities and those who have English as a second language. We have over 18 years of experience delivering high quality educational and participation activities and our theatre has produced excellent puppetry theatre for over 56 years.
