International Peacemakers’ Fund

For 10 years, the International Peacemakers’ Fund has supported worldwide projects and groups that promote nonviolence. It funds grassroots initiatives that are working towards peace and reconciliation in war-torn communities in Asia, Africa, Middle East, South America and worldwide.

  • Need


    The IPF is trying to prevent war and heal the wounds of war, using peaceful interventions designed by local people. It covers local peacebuilding in communities before (preventative), during (mediation) or after (reconciliation) violent conflict. Local, nonviolent interventions have a better success rate than military solutions and those imposed from the outside.


    Continuing 10 years of successful grantmaking, this project will make one-year grants to local, realistic peacebuilding proposals around the world. It won’t end war, but will calm the flames and repair the harm locally. It will give recipients skills in conflict resolution and access to our global network of peace practitioners. Our funding has unlocked other grants and shown confidence in often very grassroots movements, making other funders feel able to contribute after our funding ends.

    Fund realistic initiatives to support peacebuilding through small-scale grassroots groups


    » Advertise for proposals through existing worldwide networks built up over 10 years (2017)
    » Consider proposals and approve the 2 most realistic and promising (Jan-Feb)
    » Work with and support recipients throughout project lifecycle (Feb-Dec)
    » Publicise outputs and results of funded proposals, to supporters and other peace groups (2019 onwards)

    What success will look like

    Success will be receiving 10+ proposals, with funded proposals completing all proposed activities and measurably reducing tensions locally

  • Impact


    The activities funded by the project will promote peace and nonviolent conflict resolution, breaking the cycle of violence. Success will be a decrease in violence and conflict in the funded localities, to be monitored by reports from recipients and (where possible) media coverage of the situation.

    Donors will be added to our IPF mailing list (unless they opt out), providing twice-yearly updates on all projects.

  • Background


    The project makes grants to areas of likely or past conflict worldwide, so specific details will vary by location. These areas are linked by recent conflict or tensions that often precede conflict, higher than average poverty levels (as conflict damages wealth) and often fear and mistrust.


    Beneficiaries include: Whole communities in affected areas, who will live in less conflicted localities and develop skills/information about peacemaking and reconciliation; Local peacemakers, who will gain new skills that can be used beyond the end of the project; Donors, who will gain information about conflict situations around the world.

    We have been running the International Peacemakers’ Fund (IPF) for 10 years, we have strong links to peace groups worldwide through the IPF and the different Fellowship of Reconciliation branches worldwide, we have experience in making small grants through IPF and appropriately supporting recipients.
