Healthy living after cancer

Treatment for cancer can lead to a myriad of side-effects and possible malnutrition in patients. This project aims to produce and distribute information booklets for cancer patients to help them cope with the diet-related side effects of treatments whilst still maintaining a nutritious diet.

  • Need

    Need

    Research has shown that cancer patients who lose more than 10% of their pre-illness weight have death rates that are significantly higher than weight-stable cancer patients. However, our research has shown there is very little consistent information available at present that supports the cancer patient who is trying to cope with these side-effects and be healthy. 77% of surveyed health professionals agreed that there was a need to provide advice that is more consistent.

    Solution

    This project will fill the current gap and provide cancer patients with consistent and evidence-based printed and online information to support them with the diet-related side effects of cancer treatment from a trusted resource. By doing so we will also tackle many of the myths that currently surround eating healthily whilst receiving cancer treatment and enable healthcare professionals to provide consistent advice to patients throughout their treatment.

    Provide cancer patients with consistent and evidence-based printed and online information.

    Activities

    » Develop, produce and distribute a booklet collating all of our evidence-based advice for cancer patients via health professionals and online.

    We aim to reach around 5000 health professionals with this resource by the end of 2017 and will evaluate effectiveness from responses to the evaluation forms given to patients

    To raise the profile and importance of nutrition during cancer treatment

    » Create dedicated marketing campaign and utilise social media to promote new resource to health professionals and patients

    This will be measured by whether there has been an increased awareness of our work amongst health professionals and the public from the evaluation form given with the booklet.


    Aim 3

    To enable patients to self-manage and improve their well-being

    Activities

    » By reading and using the brochure, patients feel more empowered and equipped to cope with the side-effects of treatment.

    This will be measured via feedback from patients and health professionals on the evaluation forms and from focus groups with both patients and health professionals.


  • Impact

    Impact

    This project will enable us to provide consistent nutritional and dietetic information for patients to overcome common side-effects which is currently not available. In our recent survey of health professionals, 77% of respondents recognised a need to provide advice that is more consistent and in line with general healthy eating guidelines. We will demonstrate the impact through our patient evaluation and ongoing work with health professionals to understand if this meets the needs of patients.

    Risk

    A major risk we recognised in planning this project was that dietitians and other health professionals may not be confident the information is from a trusted source and therefore not use it. To address this we partnered with the British Dietetic Association (BDA) and their Oncology Specialist Group to form and disseminate the information which provides credibility for the resource. The BDA will provide us with three members of staff to support with the content and production of the leaflet

    Reporting

    We will keep donors informed of the success of the project throughout the key milestones of the project. Firstly by sharing a copy of the finalised booklet or link to the online content. Following the 6 month evaluation we will report back to donors on the initial successes of the project.

  • Background

    Location

    This project will support health professionals and their patients around the UK. We currently work closely with over 5,000 health professionals and we will deliver a dedicated PR and marketing campaign utilising both traditional means of advertising and digital channels to reach new audiences with this resource. Furthermore we will utilise respected professionals in the field of nutrition, research and dietetics to raise awareness of the need for better nutrition advice for cancer patients.

    Beneficiaries

    This will primarily address the current gap in advice and information on nutrition for people undergoing cancer treatment. 72% of cancer patients who responded to a National Institute for Health Research survey received no nutritional advice from their healthcare team. It will also support the day to day work of those working in the field of oncology and patient care such as oncology dieticians, oncology nurses, cancer information and support workers and nutritionists.
