Change Student Lives through Education in Zimbabwe

Since 2011 Makomborero has been changing lives in Zimbabwe by providing A-level education to talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds. We also help place our students at universities, offering a local university grant scheme for those who don't get international scholarships.

Our project is ongoing

  • Need

Zimbabwe is in political & economic turmoil & families are struggling to survive, let alone pay for an education for their children. There has been an increase of deaths from HIV & AIDS and stress related illnesses, leading to many orphaned children. The dropout rate in schools is very high, particularly with girls, due to the cultural pressures & expectations put on them. Access to A-level education is very limited & often deserving students never make it that far. We bridge that gap.

We take students who would never be able to write their A-levels but have incredible potential. We see students flourish under the multifaceted private education that they receive, as well as seeing them blossom under the nurturing care at our Resource Centre. Our external students also flourish, with the financial burden removed from their families. By focusing on a few students, we produce a very high calibre of student, and our students learn to adjust to 2 very different cultures.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide A-level education to talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

» Providing an A-Level scholarship programme for 8 talented students each year, selected from hundreds of applicants.
» Supporting 8 external A-level students, paying their school fees at local government schools, examination fees & providing them with textbooks.

    What success will look like

Demonstrated by the A-level results our students obtain following their two years of education.

    Aim 2

Help our students to access tertiary education.

» Working with our students to apply for university scholarships around the world.
» Offering students who don’t benefit from university scholarships a grant to study at a Zimbabwean university.

    What success will look like

Demonstrated by the students graduating from university following their degree courses, and moving into full-time employment.

I am now done with my undergrad studies. This would've only been a distant dream if not for the love you've given me over the past 6+ years. I would like to thank you for how you have greatly impacted my life. May you continue to touch many lives the same way you have done mine.
