  • Need

    Need

Behaviour and communication problems are common within families and without support can cause lasting and costly issues; young people fail to reach their potential, families suffer breakdown and future generations are impacted. Families struggle to resolve conflict and discuss issues in a calm and constructive manner. Family members can experience mental health issues. Significant numbers are from estranged families. Often issues focus around parent conflict.

    Solution

Family specialists work through issues that affect home life and family relations. Interventions are tailored to meet the needs presented by each family. They facilitate real conversations that address the issues preventing the functionality of the family. Working in this way offers a semi-structred, flexible service for families. Some use the service for a matter of weeks to work on a particular issue, others continue on a long-term basis while they still have a need.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    Improved family relationships

    Activities

» By encouraging open, honest and respectful conversations between family members.
» By equipping families to enjoy time together through shared experiences like family outings, playing games together or cooking a family meal.

The families will tell us that they are getting on better, there is less conflict in the home and they are enjoying each others company

    Aim 2

Improved boundaries of respect in the home

    Activities

» Creating family codes of conduct which all family members contribute to and own
» Developing reward systems for each family member which encourages positive behaviour
» Agreeing practical solutions to tension points within the home, such as daily chore rotas

There will be less conflict in the homelives of the families.
Family members will tell us that they give and receive greater respect from each other

    Aim 3

Greater confidence and raised self esteem for all family members

    Activities

» By valuing the contribution of each family member during Family Face Time sessions and in individual conversations.
» Celebrating the \"small wins\" for individuals and the whole family, helping them recognise that the future can be different from the past

Each family member will, through a self-reflection questionnaire, show that they feel better about themselves and are more confident in life

  • Impact

    Impact

Stabilised home lives will mean reduced referrals into the over-stretched Social Care system.
Young people's achievements at school and college will be improved, and they will be better placed to enter work.
Parents will have improved mental health meaning they will contribute more to society.
The young people will go on to be good parents in the future.
We follow the families over a long period of time to ensure that the lessons learned stick, and their long term future is positive.

    Risk

    Specialist Practitioners unavailable.
We have trained a 2nd practitioner in the last year, and this funding will enable us to recruit a third in 2018

We have strong relationships with referring agencies who value the quality of our service.
    Families not engaging properly
Each family member signs a "contract" at the start of the process

    Reporting

We produce monthly e-newsletters and quarterly paper newsletters highlighting the successes of our work
We use social media regularly to report what's happening

  • Background

    Location

Stroud is a rural district of Gloucestershire comprising of several small market towns and a number of villages and hamlets. There is significant rural isolation due to lack of transportation and communication. Within the towns there are pockets of high deprivation, clustered around social housing which is often inadequate. Due to the rural nature of the area there are low levels of aspiration, and although unemployment is low, the prospects of long term meaningful employment are limited.

    Beneficiaries

Whole families which include at least one 11-25 year old.
Whilst the project is open to all families regardless of demographic or status, typically it engages with those families who are facing social or economic isolation or disengagement.
