The Big Splash 2017

To provide essential hydrotherapy to over 400 disabled babies, children & adults every year. Therapy provided in warm water greatly benefits those with neurological conditions. It helps muscles to relax, increase movement, improves muscle strength & reduces pain. The benefits transform lives.

  • Need

There is an acute shortage of hydrotherapy pools & provision for babies, children and adults with neurological disabilities e.g. cerebral palsy, MS and Parkinson’s disease. Group sessions for children are most importantly fun yet deliver therapy through song & games. Adult sessions run as groups or for individuals, this helps reduce pain, build muscle strength, help balance with mobility and improve function in daily life. This gives confidence and enables them to complete simple tasks.

We have the only hydrotherapy pool outside a hospital in north Surrey. It is used 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year. This project will provide access to continuous hydrotherapy intervention for all; long term therapy is not available for adults with neurological conditions through the NHS & babies & children benefit greatly from this type of therapy. Helping everyone to lead more active and fulfilled lives.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Improve/maintain the mobility and independence of over 400 disabled babies, children and adults

» We will maintain the White Lodge Centre hydrotherapy pool enabling it to be accessed by the disabled community for hydrotherapy sessions.
» Support adults with longterm physical conditions who have no other therapy.
» Give babies and children with cerebral palsy maximum therapy support to maintain/improve quality of life.

    What success will look like

This will be demonstrated by: White Lodge Centre therapy records; consultation with users, parents and carers; White Lodge Centre annual quality audit.

  • Impact

The project will enable over 400 severely disabled babies, children and adults to live life to the best of their ability. Hydrotherapy improves muscle strength and physical movement giving that individual the ability to have greater independence – making a cup of tea, getting in and out of a chair, walking across a room – “It’s the little things that make a real difference”. Hydrotherapy leads to better quality of life.
Evidence: WLC therapy records; consultation with users, parents, carers.

White Lodge Centre funds the hydrotherapy pool from its own fundraising. No statutory funding is received. The main risk is not being able to raise sufficient funds. This risk has been dealt with by the White Lodge Centre CEO meeting regularly with The White Lodge Centre Chair of Trustees and Head of Fundraising to review funds received.

Donors will be reported to through (1) the White Lodge Centre Website (2) the White Lodge Centre twice yearly Newsletter, Centre Voice (3) Social Media (4) Email (5) Impact Report (6) Centre Insider (Bi-monthy newsletter)

  • Background

The White Lodge Centre hydrotherapy pool is located on our site in Chertsey, Surrey. It is housed in a purpose built room with showers, changing facilities, and an overhead hoist. The water is kept at a constant 34 C, enabling muscles to relax. The hydrotherapy pool room is also a sensory room with light, images and sound.

Over 400 severely disabled babies, children and adults living in Surrey and the surrounding areas, will benefit from the hydrotherapy pool. All have long-term neurological physical disabilities (hospital diagnosis) causing muscle contraction and deterioration from conditions such as cerebral palsy, acquired brain damage, stroke, MS, Parkinsons’ disease. Lack of mobility severely impairs day to day living.

“Alfie learnt how to kick his legs, relax his shoulders & also use the weaker side of his body. He also learned how to sign words. This was all due to the therapy he received in the hydrotherapy pool & it has changed his & our lives” Alfie's Parent

Alfie has Cerebral Palsy & started coming to WLC when he was 6 mths old. The warm water helps his muscles & limbs to relax, which allow him to move.
