Support the Festival Chorus in Hereford 2018

Community participation has been at the heart of the Three Choirs Festival for over 300 years, and is most clearly demonstrated through our Festival Chorus. Every year amateur volunteer singers from Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester come together, freely giving their time and musical know-how

May 2018 - August 2018

  • Need

Situated in a three-county region with no major concert hall, large-scale choral events with professional orchestra are difficult to stage both logistically and financially. With limited public transport to the nearest culturally strong conurbations, opportunities to experience a full range of repertoire are limited. As a result, such rich cultural experiences – for audiences and performers – are often limited to those who have the money and means to travel long distances

The festival is an opportunity for local amateur singers to participate in repertoire rarely performed outside major cities. Through open auditions, chorus members are selected for an intensive period of rehearsal, coaching and performance. The festival provides a dynamic cultural offering right on the community’s doorstep – not only invaluable experience for participants, but a gateway to choral music for new regional audiences drawn in by the festival’s strong local connections and heritage

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Encourage local amateur singers to audition and participate in the 2018 Hereford Festival Chorus

» Audition – by continuing an open audition process we encourage local members of the community to participate in the festival chorus

By raising the profile of the festival in local communities and via social media, we encourage talented local people of all ages to participate in a major music festival

    Aim 2

Provide high-quality choral coaching and performance opportunities with renowned soloists/orchestra

» Develop – working closely with the Artistic Director and professional singers we help train amateur singers to perform to a professional standard

Working closely with the Artistic Directors and professional orchestras and soloists during regular rehearsals.

    Aim 3

Maintain the highest standards of performance-acting as a beacon for choral music and local singers

» Perform – we give amateur singers the opportunity to perform in a major international music festival in some of Britain’s most majestic buildings

By continuing to champion the great British choral tradition and working with local amateur singers to prepare and perform in a world class choral festival

  • Impact

We aim to increase awareness of the festival to a wider community by involving amateur singers from all walks of life to audition and perform. The long-term outcome is to increase participation of local members of the community and celebrate local talent. We encourage singers to develop their vocal skills and in turn raise the standards of the Festival Chorus. Local and international press have commented in recent years on the quality of the Festival Chorus and our aim is to build on this

There is a risk that we do not attract new members of the community to participate in the audition processes. We hope to overcome this by actively reaching out to members of the community who are not entirely aware of the Three Choirs Festival or the Festival Chorus through more targeted marketing/advertising initiatives, local newspapers and print media, word of mouth and using social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook

Fundraising reports are sent to key stakeholders and donors following festival week, highlighting all funding streams for individual projects. We will also post progress on our website, newsletters and via social media, and share our successes widely with our audience and local communities

  • Background

The county of Herefordshire is largely rural with a population of about 60,000 in Hereford. About 28% of the population is 65 years old or above with a lower proportion of working age adults than the rest of England and Wales. The county’s economic output is low compared to other regions with comparatively lower wages. The main industries include manufacturing, health, retail and education. The county has a growing arts and culture scene and will be bidding for UK’s City of Culture 2021

Amateur singers from the counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, who have the courage and tenacity to try and push themselves to the limit, with over 80% of the chorus over the age of 55. We will help them find their voices and let them sing out! We also benefit each of the local communities by delivering a world class music festival on their doorsteps rarely heard outside of major metropolitan like London or Birmingham.
