Shades Day Fund

The Shades Day Fund has been created to help fund our caravan programme. As well as maintaining the upkeep of our 16 caravans, we have an immediate need to replace an ageing caravan at the Haven holiday park in Combe Haven.

  • Need


    The children and families we support are those struggling with some of the toughest challenges life can bring. Many are dealing with issues such as severe and sudden illness, bereavement, disability and mental health and abuse.

    Almost 5 million children in the UK live in families who cannot afford a simple break away from home. They miss out on the many positive benefits that spending time together away from the daily grind can bring.


    The Shades Day Fund has been created to help fund our caravan programme.

    When we bought our first caravan in 2002, it was a way of ensuring we could provide breaks for struggling families during the peak school holiday periods. 15 years later and we now own 16 caravans, located at seaside holiday parks around Britain. Between them they provide hundreds of families every year with a much needed and often life-changing break away from home.

    Replace our aging caravan at the Combe Haven holiday park in Kent.

    Funds allowing, we aim to replace our oldest caravan at Combe Haven during the winter of 2017-18.

    Help fund the maintenance and upkeep of the rest of our caravan stock.

    Offering short breaks for a full season in all 16 of our caravans during 2018 is a priority.

  • Impact


    Our own experience over 40+ years continually demonstrates that spending quality time together as a family results in stronger, healthier and happier families and communities. An increasing body of academic work shows that after a break schools often see an improvement in a child's attendance, behaviour and attainment, whilst adults are better engaged with agencies including further education and employment.


    Without our work, many more families each year would go without even a simple day out with many compound implications on the welfare of their family and community relationships.


    The charity produces an annual report, summarising income and activity, that is made available to all supporters in print and digital formats.

    All donors are thanked by email or letter, depending on their stated preferences.

  • Background


    The Family Holiday Association works throughout the UK. Applications for funding that meet our criteria are accepted and allocated on a first come basis up to our funding capability in any given year.

    The Combe Haven holiday park is located on East Sussex close to Hastings. Other caravans are located in Devon, Somerset, Gwyneed, Clwyd, Ayrshire, North Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.


    The charity works to support children, parents and guardians in the UK - defined as children under the age of 16 and their carers - who have not been on holiday together within the last four years and will not be able to access a break any other way.

    The Family Holiday Association was founded in 1975 on the principle that holidays are important and make a real difference to the social cohesion of families and the wider community. 40+ years later we remain the only national charity dedicated to helping disadvantaged children and their families access their first much-needed and often life changing break.
