A dance and leadership project for vulnerable young women aged 13-17 using the Centenary of Women’s Suffrage as inspiration. Sessions are focussed on building confidence, resilience and working towards Bronze Arts Awards to realise a range of benefits that extend well beyond the life of the project.
April 2018 - August 2018
Charity information: Greenwich Dance Agency
Young women are referred to Greenwich Dance’s Limitless project through a range of agencies in the borough (CAMHS, The Point, HerCentre, Newhaven PRU, Youth Offending Team, etc.). Individual circumstances differ greatly, but most referred to the project suffer from low self-esteem, lack of confidence and behaviour problems. This effects their relationships, outlook and educational chances.
We will work with participants from some of the most deprived wards in the borough including Woolwich.
Limitless 1918-2018 offers an enriching experience in a supportive environment in which young women can challenge and feel proud of themselves.
By working with inspirational female dance artists, creating movement, contributing to a performance and completing their Bronze Art Award participants increase their confidence, team-working skills and self-esteem. It provides an alternative model of education that is practical rather than academic and allows participants to achieve in a different way.

Activities» Workshops exploring the Centenary of Women’s Suffrage through movement will celebrate women’s achievements.
» Young women are supported by nurturing dance artists to create their dance and movement

We have developed a self-evaluation framework for young people joining participatory projects - measuring a range of outcomes, including, self-esteem, wellbeing and outlook.
Young people will complete their Bronze Arts Award, a nationally recognised qualification.

Monitor the number of Arts Awards completed and submit all portfolios for moderation.
Young women improve wellbeing and physical activity
Activities» 1 week residency plus follow-up dance sessions increase physical activity
» Signposting and encouraging young women to continued engagement in dance and ongoing activity.
We will monitor the numbers of young women joining our ongoing courses and classes (subsidised and free sessions). Follow-up meetings with participants to reflect on experiences.
Limitless 1918-2018 is the first in a series of projects for and with young Londoners which will raise aspirations and increase confidence of the local young women enabling them to realise their potential as creative citizens. The sense of personal identity and tradition of female resilience imparted by the project will inform and enbolden this group of young women to continue to participate and influence cultural activities into the future.
*Referred young women don’t take-up places in the project
We will offer taster sessions around the borough so young women can try the activity before signing-up; working closely referring agencies to understand young women’s needs
*Young people leave the project before performance
We work with highly skilled and nurturing artists and are supported by a pastoral team from our organisation and referring agencies - with the aim of focusing participants on the activity.
If relevant film/photo approvals are given we will record the final performance, including interviews with participants, that will be available via GD websites.
We will write and digitally disseminate a final blog/report on the residency.

Limitless will take place at our home, The Borough Hall. Young people will referred from locations across the borough, particularly those in areas of high deprivation such as Thamesmead and Woolwich. It is hoped that by bringing participants to our building, they will see Greenwich Dance as a space they can be part of.
Follow-up workshops and a final performance/celebration event will take place in Woolwich to link to the history of women’s work in factories during WW1.
Limitless works with a number of referring agencies (CAMHS, HerCentre, Youth Offending Teams, Newhaven PRU and The Point) to offer this project to some of the most vulnerable young women effected by a huge range of issues, including (but not limited to) mental health issues, those living in poverty, young carers, those at risk of offending and looked after young people. By working in partnership with other organisations, we can identify young women who would most benefit from this programme.
We are the Royal Borough of Greenwich's dance provider. We work across the borough with a number of partners in a range of contexts providing dance activity to the least engaged. We have a 25 year history of providing access routes into dance and the arts more broadly.
We run a year-round programme of activity, which will offer progression routes to young people taking part in this project to encourage sustained engagement in dance, the arts and Greenwich Dance.
