  • Need

The numbers of grandparents raising their grandchildren is increasing especially in London & the N.E. of the the country. Many of these grandparents experience isolation, discrimination, financial difficulty, a lack of support & often have health difficulties of their own. They're often reluctant to approach children services for help because they don't want interference or fear children maybe taken away from them & placed in stranger-foster care. Grandparents provide crucial stability & love.

There is an urgent need for local & national government action to provide more financial & practical support to kinship care families. Until this need is met our advice line is often the first & only point of call for grandparent kinship carers. This line provides comprehensive expert advice on welfare & other sources of financial support as well as advice & info on many other issues inc: legal orders, employment, housing, education, disability, & parenting.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To increase our reach & help and support more of the 150,000+ grandparent kinship carers in the UK

» Increasing the capacity, efficiency and effectiveness of our crucial Advice Line service. We need to more of what we know we do well.

Year on year we are experiencing a growth in demand of over 30% more calls to our advice line. We would get more calls & be able to help more if we increase its accessibility.

  • Impact

By increasing the weekly hours of the advice line service by just 5 hours a week and being able to employ just one more expert kinship care advice worker we could be able to look after & help at least a further 1500 grandparent kinship carers more than doubling the number of those we are able to help from last year. In July we have Helpline Partnerships advising us on further improvements we could make to our service, to help us ensure we are operating as effectively as our resources permit.

The risks are that we are unable to service all the calls for help that we get or that we are unable to maintain the quality of our response & the amount of time we dedicate to our callers. We have managed these by a) increasing the number of expert advisers we have & b) by ensuring we retain atleast two hours per day for each adviser to be released from call-duty to ensure they can carry out the supportive administration, such as letter writing & to ensure the wellbeing of our advisers.

We will compile a concise monthly report from the onset of the funding to show how many calls we have taken, the type of topics we are dealing with & the comparative increase in calls and call types from previous years. We will also compile a more details overview at the end of a 12 month period.

  • Background

National but with a focus on London and the North East as this is where we know their are a greater concentration of grandparent kinship carers.

Grandparent Kinship Carers and the children in their care as both are so often invisible and ignored by many local authorities and national policy makers.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We are the only national charity targeting this often forgotten group; grandparent kinship carers & the children they tend. Many of these kinship-cared children have experienced difficult family circumstances. Although these children heal & thrive from the stability & love kinship care provides; neither these children nor their grandparents receive the entitlements & support given to stranger-foster-care/adopters.
We think this must change & until it does we have to grow to help more.

Lets Grandparents Plus help at least 5 kinship care families.

It was only by chance that I happened across you online and I’m wondering just how many people could be helped if they knew you were there. I tried for nearly 6 months to get information I got from you in a very pleasant 5 minute conversation thank you so much
