Water for a rural primary school in Ashanti Ghana
176 children at the Kyebi primary school in Nusuta need water. We seek funding to drill a bore hole at the school with a hand pump. This is the first stage of a project to renovate the school, the crumbling building needs new floors, roofs, doors, electricity & the teachers & pupils need equipment.
July 2017 - July 2018
Charity information: Compassion Direct UK - CDUK
Safe water is essential to life & important to health. The school has no water. Currently water is collected from intermittent rainfall or by bucket from a nearby stream. The stream when it is running is polluted by cattle & by villagers general use for washing & cleaning. Contaminated water causes waterborne & infectious diseases like Cholera & Hepatitis to anyone who may use it without sterilization treatment. It is difficult to teach hygiene to pupils without a satisfactory supply of water.
We will commission a qualified bore hole expert to carry out a geophysical investigation on or near the school site. When a suitable site is identified bore hole drilling will take place to include supply & installation of PVC casings & screens, a bore hole development pumping test, gravel packs etc.
A water quality test will then be carried out & submitted.
If the water test is satisfactory a Afridev hand pump will be fitted upon a concrete platform and installed ready for use by the school.

We hope that this project will be the first stage of our involvement to improve the school & life chances of its pupils in the future.
We hope to renovate the school fabric & replace the roof after which we want to provide water harvesting tanks giving water for more general use to relieve the well.
The provision of the well will provide cleaner & more plentiful water to the school & reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases. Teachers will be in a better position to teach hygiene to pupils.
A geophysical examination of the area will take place prior to the bore hole being started. Once the hole has been dig the water will need to be tested for purity. There is always the risk of some form of underground contamination depending upon the type of terrain but consultation with experienced professionals should reduce the possibility of this occurrence. Sometimes in extremely dry weather bore holes can dry up temporally it is for this reason that we wish to provide harvesting tanks.
We can report to donors according to their preference, by negotiation. We can report by a 3/6 monthly written report by email with photographs. We can meet with donors or their representative if necessary before &/or after the project. We usually post progress regularly on Face book.

The Kyebi Primary School is in Nsuta, Ashanti, Ghana. This is a very rural area many miles from a large city.
The parents of the school children are mainly unemployed or small subsistence or cocoa farmers or miners.
The 176 existing pupils at the school and all their teachers together with the many pupils who will follow in future years as long as the water supply continues. CDUK hope to maintain strong links with the school into the future so that we are able to continue our support.
We have experience of working with rural schools in South America and many of the challenges are similar to this school in Ghana. In several provinces of Northern Argentina we have installed wind turbines, water harvesting tanks and bore holes.
