Outdoor Education for disabled children
Ufton Adventure is an innovative and ground breaking charity. We raise the aspiration and attainment of disadvantaged and disabled children through outdoor education. Our success is due to strong partnerships and close collaborations with schools, and the repeated nature of the intervention.
Charity information: Ufton Adventure
Every child needs to spend time outside experiencing the natural world. Children with disabilities tend to be more isolated, and participate less in social and community activities. At Ufton Adventure we carefully differentiate planning and risk assessments to ensure that every pupil has a chance to enjoy the outdoors.
We have developed two programmes with children visiting repeatedly. 'Life Ready' is designed to support the children's development, help them cope with their emotions and better understand how to cope with school and home. The other 'Work Ready' is aimed at helping disabled young people become prepared for work. We are developing collaborations with local employers to combine our work to assist disabled young people in gaining the confidence, skills and experience needed to get a job.

All children share many of the benefits and outcomes of outdoor education, but outdoor education can contribute significantly in helping young disabled people relieve stress and anxiety, develop social skills, motivate learning across the curriculum and allow them to be practical, responsible and show their abilities.
We develop skills with our programmes over time that will lead to work placements in retail, catering and gardening.
For many children with special needs and their parents, a residential trip can be very worrying which means that simple childhood experiences of sleeping away from home are rare. In addition to this, children are asked to take appropriate levels of responsibility for themselves which can be very challenging. Over the course of a programme of visits to Ufton Court children experience a different style of teaching and learning in a new setting and their confidence grows.
Donors will receive regular updates via newsletters.
