New Gym Equipment

We need strength and conditioning equipment for our newly refurbished gym. The gym has been a very important part of the Club; not just for regular members, helping them to get fit and motivated, but also for the locals as an affordable community gym.

  • Need

We are building a new gym but only have very old and outdated gym equipment to put in it. We want our facility to be as appealing as possible to young members and and the wider community and be able to give everyone the most effective fitness experience to help tackle health related issues within the community. This new strength and conditioning equipment compliments any cardio workout.

The new gym equipment will ensure that we can offer a modern and exciting fitness experience to all users. It will help us to attract new members to the club and help us to raise revenue through gym memberships.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Offering something to encourage more young people to use our facilities and access advice.

» Refurbish the gym and run special classes for young people in order to encourage them to use our facility and interact with our youth workers.

    What success will look like

The number of young people using and becoming members of the youth club, especially within the age range of 16-21 will increase.

    Aim 2

Be able to offer a facility in which young people can complete fitness instructor qualifications.

» Equip our gym to the correct qualification standard.

    What success will look like

We will have trained at least one young person per year to be a fitness instructor.

    Aim 3

Help tackle health related issues within the local community.

» Offer affordable gym use to the local community. Target young people to tackle health issues before adulthood.

    What success will look like

Level of gym membership within the local community. Success of special classes for young people.

  • Impact

More young people will use our facility, thereby being able to access the advice of our youth workers and other agencies.
The community will have an affordable fitness space to use.
We will demonstrate both of these through increased membership and high take-up from locals.

One risk is not raising enough money to be able to fully equip the gym but we are also raising money through other avenues and will be able to acquire equipment in a stage-by-stage process if necessary.

We will be able to send donors updates on the gym refurbishment and reports on user level for the gym.

  • Background

The gym is housed in our youth club in Bermondsey, from where we have been serving the local community since 1908. We offer a programme of sports and arts related activities, as well as outward bound trips with lots of youth work alongside these. We are within the Borough of Southwark, one of the most deprived boroughs in London.

All of our current members, new members, the members of the Fisher Amateur Boxing Club (part of the DFYC) and the local community - both residents and workers - who can use our affordable gym.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We own a wonderful facility in Bermondsey that is used by the Downside Fisher Youth Club and our boxing club. We have the space for a new gym and need to fill it with new equipment. We have young people who would greatly benefit from the use of a fitness facility and we are able to extend this to the wider community.
