Be a Tooth Fairy this Christmas - Dentals for dogs
Forever Hounds Trust rescues, rehabilitates and finds forever homes for greyhounds and lurchers. Many dogs in our care suffer from injuries and sickness caused by cruelty or neglect. Our Tooth Fairy project will raise funds to ensure all our dogs receive the dental and medical treatment they need.
December 2017 - December 2018
Charity information: Forever Hounds Trust
Many of the dogs we rescue have severe periodontal disease, rotting teeth, bleeding gums or infected abscesses. A lifetime of neglect leaves many of the hounds entering our care unable to eat solid food and suffering from severe mouth pain. Over 70% of the dogs we take in require dental and medical treatment before we can give them the second chance at life they deserve by placing them into permanent, caring, family homes.
Forever Hounds Trust offers a crucial lifeline to greyhounds and lurchers in need. We provide vital dental and veterinary care from a routine scale and polish to the removal of a mouthful of rotten teeth. As well as providing care essential to dogs' survival and health, this care means we can then place these gentle loving companions into their forever homes.

What success will look like
Success will mean that we have the resources to provide every dog in our care with immediate treatment for acute dental problems.
As well as enabling us to provide treatment essential to dogs' health and well-being, the dental and veterinary treatment provided in this project will enable dogs to be homed to loving homes.
We know from our experience of homing over 450 dogs per year that this brings huge benefits to hounds and humans alike. We will share these stories and spread the word about what wonderful pets sighthounds make through all of our communication channels.
There is a risk that demand for us to take in and care for more greyhounds and lurchers in need and the associated costs of dental and veterinary treatment will continue to increase.
We will address this through careful allocation of our always-limited resources, as well as additional fundraising efforts.
Donors to this project will receive a report on expenditure on dental and veterinary treatment, and the impact of that treatment on greyhounds and lurchers in our care. We will also include case studies and dental issues in our supporter communications throughout the year.

Forever Hounds Trust operates across much of the country, rescuing, rehabilitating and homing unwanted, retired, abused or abandoned greyhounds and lurchers. Many dogs come to us from pounds (where, if unclaimed, they would be euthanised) or Ireland, where the majority of racing greyhounds are bred.
Each year we find loving homes for around 500 dogs, many of whom come to the charity in desperate need. Our provision of dental and veterinary care along with behavioural and post-homing support transforms these dogs’ lives, and enables them to go onto happy new lives in permanent homes. The lives of their new owners are typically also transformed!
For over 20 years we have been a lifeline for dogs in need and have found loving forever homes for over 9,000 dogs. We are the leading greyhound rescue charity independent of the racing industry - our independence allows us to champion greyhound welfare.
Forever Hounds Trust receives no money from the greyhound racing industry and rely wholly on donations and the generosity of our supporters to continue our vital work.

“severe periodontal disease – infected and bleeding gums, rotting teeth, mouth was extremely painful to touch and he screamed when it was examined. Water had to be changed multiple times every day, as blood was pouring out of his mouth into his bowl when he drank. Lost 24 teeth during dental”
