  • Need

Across the East Midlands there are hundreds of NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) young people who are severely disadvantaged, trapped in cycles of negative behaviour and unsure of where to go or what to do with their lives.
Often lacking self-confidence and motivation, they remain trapped, their self-worth diminishing over time and once the young people are referred to us, many have developed mental health problems as a result of their experiences, such as anxiety and depression.

Due to being NEET for long periods of time, our 'Engage' course reintroduces young people to an education and training environment so that they can begin to develop skills to get their lives back on track.
With low confidence levels & suffering loneliness, we'll make an effort at TwentyTwenty to celebrate Christmas to begin breaking down these barriers; a hearty Christmas dinner at all of our centres where the young people can laugh, eat & be merry. For many, it'll be their first x-mas meal!

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Our young people will develop self-confidence

» All our staff are trained in Solution-Focused Coaching, helping young people to focus on what they can do, and not what they can't.
» Young people will have opportunities to try new activities in our Lifeskills Centres, as well as outdoor activities.
» The Engage course has 10 to 13 young people per centre, which is ideal for enabling them to step out of their comfort zones and make friends.

    What success will look like

Students fill out forms about their emotional / mental wellness regularly throughout the course. These will demonstrate improvements. Feedback from tutors / coaches is also used.

    Aim 2

Our young people will learn to deal with difficult situations

» Being in an education environment after a long period NEET is a challenge. The young people will have chance to acclimatize gradually, but for real.
» Solution-Focussed Coaching techniques will support the young people to learn skills to cope with problems that occur outside of the Lifeskills Centre
» Exposure to a new group of friends is important to testing the young peoples' abilities to communication and deal with conflict confidently.

    What success will look like

Students will get opportunity to talk about their ability to deal with conflict/ problems and whether these skills have improved. Feedback from tutors / coaches will also be used.

    Aim 3

Our young people will try new things and meet new people

» We aren't just an education provider; Engage is about having fun! Young people can explore what they are good at and what they love
» The small groups of 10 to 13 people make it a safe and welcoming environment, where young people who have been alone can finally make friends.
» We're going to celebrate Christmas with our young people. For many it'll be their first hot, sit-down x-mas meal!

    What success will look like

Surveys will be conducted asking young people about how they feel meeting and building relationships with new people. We will also assess based on classroom contributions etc.

    Aim 4

Our young people will be able to make positive choices about what to do next after TwentyTwenty

» Each young person gets a dedicated coach who will work 1to1 with them to help them plan their futures, whether that's further education or work.
» Young people will pick up Solution-Focussed Coaching skills and be able to apply these to their decisions and life choices.

    What success will look like

Each young person will have identified a next step plan with the support their coach.
They will be asked how confident they are with making choices in an end of course survey.

    Aim 5

Our young people will be prepared & ready to move onto study, volunteering or employment.

» Engage acclimatises NEET young people back into education / training , so that they are ready to take the next step.

    What success will look like

Each young person in their next steps plan will highlight their chosen path - study/work/training. Their successful start and progression on this path will indicate the success.

  • Impact

For the 30+ young people aged 16 to 25 years old who will take part in this cohort of Engage in Derby, Leicester and Loughborough, their lives will be completely transformed and they'll be able to see a bright future ahead for possibly the first time.
They'll develop the confidence and self-worth to make a positive plan of progression, have the support of new friends and the guidance of professional staff to make it happen and pursue their goals.

The risk of our Journey 2 Work program (6 months) is that some vulnerable young people find it too intensive after being out of education and training for such a long time.
The Engage course means that we can target and support the very hardest to reach, with a much higher success rate, as its a shorter course (2 months) and the operating hours are less intense - 10:30am until 2:20pm 3 days per week.
This means that we can retain a higher % of young people, thus changing more lives.

We will report to donors via a letter or email a PDF report (according to their preferences), which summarises feedback from tutors and coaches, and the young peoples' self assessments on issues such as confidence and friendships.
Young people case studies will be included in the report.

This project will focus on those who are particularly hard-to-reach, such as those from minority ethnic backgrounds, victims of crime, mental health problems etc. who have been NEET for a long period of time.

"I’ve never seen anywhere that works like TwentyTwenty does; this place gave me a massive push. TwentyTwenty gave me space to progress because people can’t change overnight. They worked with me individually on what I needed. I loved it. It’s built me ready for the next step.”
