Project InTeraction (IT)
Our vision is to add state-of-the-art computer technology to benefit our children with special needs. We are thinking BIG! Brand new computers with customised programs, furniture designed for their limitations and a shared network throughout, to enable joint use of resources.
March 2018 - March 2019
Charity information: Side By Side (Children) Limited
Currently, Side By Side has 12 deteriorating desktop computers and some ipads. The current technology does not have a shared network option, limiting resource interaction.
The technology is also too old to accommodate newer programs and apps that would hugely benefit the children. Our computer furniture is worn out and totally unsuitable for children with poor vestibular tone as well as for children who are rigidly immobile.
Project InTeraction will provide brand new computers with state-of-the-art functions including relevant apps and programs and most importantly, a shared network. This will help our children tremendously with communication, education and focus. Brand new custom designed furniture will enable even the most severely disabled child to access computer technology and improve their lives in a transformative way!
Ensuring optimum comfort for special needs children while they use computer technology.
Activities» We will completely revamp our computer stations, commissioning ergonomically designed furniture to suit specific types of individual limitations.
Discomfort caused the children difficulty staying focused and engaged. We will monitor how long they can now sit and concentrate with new adjustable & ergonomic furniture.
Maximizing their education through recommended apps and customised programs.
Activities» New computers will have vetted state-of-the-art programming and hand-picked apps that will stimulate users and encourage interactive learning
Each child's ILP (individual learning program) has personal goals and weekly milestones recorded per session. We will monitor for changes achieved thanks to new technology.
Creating an open network of communication & resources shared between staff members & users.
Activities» Cutting edge software on new computers will connect users, staff and parents.
We will install an open forum to track communication between staff, users and parents and we will be able to easily gauge the increased interaction based on feedback on the forum.
Our long term goal is to enhance the children's education, and enable them to be productive society members. Comfortable furniture will sharpen their focus. Hands-on relevant educational programming, and great dedicated educators, united by a shared network will facilitate bringing out the best in these children.
The children's ILP books will demonstrate this by showing how much they have improved their cognitive abilities, their concentration span & knowledge at the end of each academic year.
Dealing with specialized software, we have to be prepared for viruses and malfunctions. Our computer technician will be on standby for the first week of program and we'll have backup available in case of problems.
Confidentiality: The shared network can potentially expose all communications and progress. Although some transparency will be of benefit to collaborative work, we will administer strong passwords allowing only relevant staff members to access sensitive information.
We are excited to bring donors feedback through our website offering photos, media and news of Side By Side. We will also prepare biannual reports on our projects, with data including parental and staff feedback on children's improvement as a result of the project.

Our project will take place on Side By Sides grounds located in Hackney, North London. Hackney is home to many nationalities and ethnic minorities. Thereby fostering an atmosphere of tolerance, acceptance and respect.
Side By Side is the only special school and integrated nursery in Hackney . Side By Side is a vital community resource that educates each child according to their specialized needs in their specially accommodated building on Big Hill
62 children in total, 29 girls and 33 boys, will benefit from our project. Our participants are aged between 5 and 19 years. All of the children suffer from limitations and disabilities, among them Immobility/paralysis, Down syndrome, Soto syndrome and different stages along the autism spectrum.
The project will also benefit the team working with the children, allowing improved communication between parents, professionals and volunteers working with the same child.
Side By Side is uniquely positioned to carry out this project, working with the local community's special needs children for 20 years, understanding each child and how they could best benefit to improve. We have a proven track record & an infrastructure in place, and know what works and what doesn't.
Most importantly, Side By Side is absolutely passionate about helping each and every child maximize their potential. Our dedicated team tries everything to achieve this goal.
