Charity information: Guy Mascolo Football Charity
Young people in disadvantaged areas can be disengaged from their potential and their opportunities to succeed in life. They sometimes have limited role models, are distracted by anti-social activities, have complex family or social issues and lack guidance from home or school.
In Battersea, where we are based, we've lost 2 young people known to us in the past 5 years to knife crime. We want intervene in young peoples lives before they fall through society's cracks and give them opportunities.
Our engagement tool is Football. The love of the game is a global phenomenon. As part of the project our young people will train and play matches weekly. They must also study for a BTEC in Sports, this gives them industry opportunities outside of 'playing'. Each participant will work with our mentors to create in-depth action plans identifying motivations, ambitions and goals. They will attend our workshops, have opportunities to gain employability skills and support for any issues they face.
Engage young people in a positive activity they enjoy and are passionate about.
Activities» Football is a unifying activity with many positive outcomes. We will have weekly training sessions and enter the team into games and tournaments.
We will measure this by the attendance and enthusiasm of our young people. We will be asking for feedback from them continuously to ensure the Sport/Education offering is engaging.
Help those young people take their future seriously and decide where they want to go in life
Activities» With their mentor they will make a plan based on their motivations, ambitions and goals
» Exposure to different options and opportunities utilising our affiliates in Sport, Education and Business (Unilever, Monster, Umbro etc)
Using Monitoring & Evaluation tools with our Mentors, each participant will have an individual action plan with which they will refer to and measure successes or areas to work on.
Give young people a solid Educational base with BTEC qualifications and Life Skills.
Activities» We are registered as a college and will run BTEC's in Sport from our HQ in Battersea, covering methodology, physiology and psychology in Sport
» Teacher Support throughout to help young people through the course.
» Practical Life Skill workshops will be offered on everything from money management, confidence building, employability, healthy lifestyle
Success in the area will be a BTEC 2 or 3 in Sports. Certificates will also be awarded for Life Skill Workshops. Success could also be a pathway to employment or university.
Improve young people's self esteem and understand the the influence they have on their communities.
Activities» Through mentoring, see areas of the young person's life that need addressing and work with them to make good choices for themselves, family and wider.
Again, using Monitoring & Evaluation tools with our Mentors, such as documented forms, each participant will track their progress and experiences of the course.
We hope the long term changes this project will bring about is a solid platform and pathway for young people to thrive in life and feel empowered.
At the end of the project we expect our participants to have achieved a BTEC level 2 or 3 in Sports, to be taking an active role in their futures and making good decisions, have the confidence and demeanour to conduct themselves professionally at all times and to be having a positive impact on their families, friends and communities.
Attendance - poor or low attendance will be monitored and addressed immediately.
Behaviours - all participants will sign a code of conduct and will be expected to adhere to this.
Funding - we believe be have a realistic budget for the project and spending will be closely monitored. To offer the young people the full project as described we need funding above the government allocation. If we are unable to secure this funding the project will be scaled down until funds are found.
Donors will receive a 6 monthly report on the progress of the participants, with regular updates available on our website. We will also invite donors to an open evening for the project.

The location of this project will be split between Battersea, Selhurst and North London Campus, but our target young people will be from Battersea.
Battersea remains characterised by economic inequality, with four housing large housing estates being surrounded by more affluent areas. We currently reach with our Projects Winstanley, Surrey Lane and Doddington estates and do work within these communities and with schools in the area.
The project will benefit the young people on the project, their immediate friends and family, and the wider community.
We are based in the heart of Battersea, with strong links and awareness in the Estates and with Wandsworth Council. Our outreach and drop in projects attract young people from all walks of life. Young people are referred to us from the Young Offenders and Reparation teams in the borough to work with young people with support and mentoring.
