Further Education in Kenya

Since 1996 Out of Afrika has run a successful child sponsorship program which has assisted in supporting over 250 children through their Primary and Secondary school education.
With most of the students performing well at secondary school we would like to assist them to College and University.

March 2018 - July 2021

  • Need

It has become evident that most of the students from our child sponsorship program are seeking employment after secondary school due to lack of personal funds and support from their individual sponsors to continue with further education.
Whilst our sponsorship program has successfully supported over 250 children through primary & secondary education with donations from individual sponsors in the UK, USA and Europe, their sponsors are unable to commit to supporting them through higher education.

In addition to our primary & secondary sponsorship program we would now like to offer college & university scholarships to students who have performed well in their secondary school exams & wish to continue with their education.
We would give well performing students the opportunity to apply for a scholarship for further education at college or university should their individual sponsor not be able to support them. The scholarship would provide course fees, books & exam fees for 3 years.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide further education scholarships to 5 students who wish to study at higher education level

» Support 5 students through higher education for 3 years by providing college or university fees, books and exam fees.

    What success will look like

Success will be improved educational outcomes for the students selected for scholarships with completion of a college certificate or diploma or university degree and employment.

  • Impact

In the long term this project will ensure that more students are reaching their higher educational goals rather than seeking employment straight after secondary school because of lack of personal funds.
We will demonstrate the success of this project by the higher level of qualifications the students are awarded with.
Success will be an increased number of students accessing college or university each year, then finding higher quality employment with their certificates, diplomas & degrees.

There may be the risk of a student starting a further education course at college or university and not liking the subject and wanting to change course. Our child sponsorship co-ordinator in Kenya will support the students in selecting the their courses prior to them starting the course. She will encourage them to go to open days and visit the college or university. Once started, if a student wishes to change course they will be asked to contribute any charges liable for the change.

Donors will receive newsletter updates at the end of each term, 3 times a year with progress reports from the students who have received scholarships. We will provide donors with written reports and photos of graduation ceremonies on completion of their qualification.

  • Background

The project is based in and around Thika, Central Province of Kenya. Thika is an industrial town 25 miles from the capital of Nairobi.
Our child sponsorship program supports children from the town and villages within Thika and it's smaller neighbouring town Ruiru.
Students benefiting from the scholarship will be able to attend colleges and universities in the local and wider area of their choice. Out of Afrika have a vocational college in Thika offering several higher education courses.

Students already within our child sponsorship program who are due to complete their secondary school exams will be the beneficiaries of this project. Students will need to have performed well at secondary school to proceed to further education
We have budgeted for 5 students to benefit from this program and receive a scholarship for a 3 year college or university course.
If our project successful we will continue to seek funding to support more students in proceeding years.
