Housing destitute asylum seekers and refugees

We are one of the only charities in the UK which house failed asylum seekers and destitute refugees. Our idea is to build upon our network of properties and use the money to house more refugees and maintain the accommodation to a great standard. This will also tackle the issue of homelessness.

  • Need

As it stands for every room that becomes available, we have around 40 refugees/asylum seekers on the waiting list for that space. We are therefore trying to stop asylum seekers becoming homeless - which is a growing problem. Once they have been housed they are in a better place to re-engage with solicitors. Those who have recently become refugees lose their home office accommodation so we also want to help them into suitable housing so they don't end up on the streets.

We are aiming to acquire a couple of new shared houses which we will furnish and decorate to give shelter to refugees/asylum seekers. It will have an immediate impact in giving an asylum seekers & refugee on our waiting list a roof over their head. It will also help ease the waiting list for council housing as we will be able to help some refugees into shared accommodation. In the long term ending destitution and homelessness will encourage more integration among refugees and asylum seekers.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Reducing homelessness among refugees and asylum seekers.

» Expanding our accommodation for refugees and asylum seekers with the help of private landlords and social housing associations.

    What success will look like

Success will be housing around 17 refugees and asylum seekers in our new properties.

    Aim 2

Furnish and decorate the refugee houses to a high standard.

» Use our community volunteers to help decorate the houses with the refugees/asylum seekers. This will also enable culture sharing.

    What success will look like

Take photos of our volunteer action days showing the houses furnished and safe for refugees/asylum seekers to live in long term.

    Aim 3

    Refugee and asylum seeker integration.

» Get our refugees/asylum seekers involved in community events in their local areas and offer volunteering - gardening, cooking and English classes.

    What success will look like

More refugees and asylum seekers involved in their local community groups, libraries and leisure clubs. Also improved levels of English. We will reference these on support plans.

  • Impact

The long term changes will see a significant reduction of homeless refugees and asylum seekers. This will also mean our residents will have a better chance of integrating into society now that they have suitable shelter. We will demonstrate this by evaluating the numbers on our referral/waiting lists which will be reduced. We also hope to grow our network of refugee and asylum seeker volunteers who can help with our fundraising activities. This will help our residents to make new friends too.

Risks relate to the difficulty in finding affordable houses for refugees and asylum seekers. We have dealt with this for over a decade but with our strong links and reputation we have liaised with a housing association in Nottingham and private landlords about taking on some new properties. The housing climate is always unstable but we do our best to secure suitable properties at a low cost for refugees and asylum seekers.

Our donors will be updated on the progress of our housing via our monthly newsletter. The expansion of our housing will also be reflected in our annual report and on our website. We are also creating a 10 year anniversary commemoration film which will include highlights of our projects.
