  • Need

    Need

Despite our work over the last 10 years, class numbers remain high and classrooms overcrowded in a small number of our partner schools. Additional classrooms are needed in order to accommodate growing enrolments, whilst upgrades are needed to other classrooms to ensure they offer a safe, bright and spacious learning environment.

    Solution

We aim to build or upgrade up to 20 classrooms over the 2 years or so. In doing so, we will help to reduce class numbers to an average of 30 and maximum of 40 pupils per classroom.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To reduce average class sizes to 30 pupils per class.

    Activities

    » Build 7 additional classrooms

Success will be the elimination of any class with more than 40 pupils

    Aim 2

    To create conducive learning environments

    Activities

» Upgrade 12 existing classrooms to make them safer, brighter and cleaner.

Success will be ensuring that all classrooms are bright, cool and water-tight, and that they all have ceilings and glazed windows.

  • Impact

    Impact

The ultimate long-term objective of our work, including the funding of extra teachers, is to provide our partner schools with the capacity to deliver an education worth having and to improve the future prospects for the children they serve.

    Risk

If school enrolments continue to rise to the extent that, even with these additional classrooms, average class sizes remain above our target. We work closely with schools to make sure that school rolls are managed as much as possible whilst ensuring that no child is denied access to an education and we will continue to build additional classrooms wherever they are needed.

    Reporting

Updates on our classroom building and upgrade programme will be posted on our social media channels and in our regular e-newsletter.

  • Background

    Location

Our work is located in the isolated and impoverished region of Kasigau in rural south-east Kenya. Our partner schools are located in village communities where the large majority of households live a subsistence existence, and as a result many children come from hugely disadvantaged and impoverished backgrounds.

    Beneficiaries

This project will benefit the more than 2,500 children that attend our partner schools now, and many hundreds more that the schools will serve for many years to come.
