Conquer The Kitchen (plus)

Conquer the Kitchen aims to empower disadvantaged children & teenagers and teen mums and dads to prepare nutritious meals safely, without compromising on their budget.
Plus refers to a holiday breakfast club where our Conquer the Kitchen users are active in delivering BREAKFASTS to kids in need.

  • Need


    Our survey revealed that due to poverty too many kids have unhealthy diets.According to the School Food Trust, 64% of adolescents "go without prepared healthy school meals."
    1) Healthy food is often perceived as expensive to obtain; alienating young people on financial constraints
    2)Unhealthy lifestyle due to lack of knowledge.
    3) Time-consuming to prepare,especially when compared to the convenient temptation of fast foods.
    Poor diet is also responsible for exacerbating common health issues.


    Conquer the Kitchen engages 160 young careers, children and teenage mums and dads between the ages 10-18 and inspires them to have control of their kitchens, budget and health .We will deliver 5 basic cookery classes weekly which will accommodate up to 32 users each. Cookery Class will incorporate, shopping and budgeting skills, nutrition techniques and cost and waste effectiveness of resources.
    We also offer a breakfast and lunch club for children in need. Cookery Class users will deliver it.

    Aim 1

    All Secondary school-age children will be able to prepare basic nutritious meal and packed lunches


    » 5 free weekly cookery classes engaging over 160 children. Class covers basic cookery,packaging,storing and hygiene skills.
    » A quarterly food exhibition for users` parents,schools and community to showcase users work.
    » An illustrate recipe book created by users.

    What success will look like

    Users will complete food logs reporting on what they ate,how much they spent on and how they prepared it.Teachers will comment on number of students who consistently bring lunch.

    Aim 2

    Users will learn to navigate food options and be empowered to cook and eat healthfully.


    » Each cookery lesson will be preceded with a 15 min fun and stimulating healthy awareness workshop.

    What success will look like

    User daily food logs will indicate healthy eating habits. Overweight users have agreed to monitor progress with weekly weigh ins by nutritionist who will share statistics.

    Aim 3

    Users will learn to cook healthy meals without COMPROMISING on BUDGET.


    » A 10 min budgeting workshop accompanying cookery class.Users will accompany teacher on shopping trip and learn to shop seasonally, maximize resources
    » A competition where children are challenged to prepare a healthy quality meal with minimal costs.

    What success will look like

    Users food logs will verify success. Users will meet with personal financial consultant each quarter-consultants reports and statistics will indicate money management skills

    Aim 4

    All local children should have access to nutritious breakfast and lunch-even during holidays.

    What success will look like

    User sign in sheets and end of holiday feedback forms. Pictures of children enjoying nourishing breakfasts.

  • Impact


    Users will acquire culinary skills including the ability to use resources rather than having to buy all ingredients prescribed by recipes.Skills will be reinforced when users apply them at breakfast club.
    Cookery class incorporates budgeting tools which will ensure that disadvantaged families have knowledge to access affordable food
    Health eating workshops reinforce positive health habits for life.
    We accommodate a range of users via valuing their differences by teaching various cultural food


    Lack of interested users. However this is unlikely and easily mitigated as it is our users along with other local children and parents who requested this project. We have a large network and excellent publicity strategies so that we can target more users.

    Financial risk where food prices are on the rise and may conflict our initial budget. We will make a contingency food plan and utilize seasonally economical resources.;


    Funders of this project will receive a bi-monthly newsletter / email, report on the project detailing the ongoing and forthcoming progress, and any necessary changes that have been made to the project plans. We will also utilize social media to report project detail.

  • Background


    Our of service users are means tested benefit recipients living in Hackney ;which has one of the highest rates of child poverty in England. (L. B. Hackney Child Poverty needs Assessment 2014). The Hackney rate for children living in poverty using the End Child Poverty Campaign measure stood at 41% in 2013. This is the second highest rate in the country and in London. (A Profile of Hackney,January 2016). Similarly,the London Food Poverty Profile reports that 49% of local kids are affected.


    All our service users are reliant on means tested benefits and on free school meals and school breakfast clubs and other food services. 62% of users reported to have less than £10 to spend on food per child per week. (Food Facts,our internal consultation,Feb 17)
    48% of users are affected by learning or physical disability.
    41% of users have classes themselves as socially isolated.

    We target a diverse group of kids from mixed backgrounds and genders between the ages of 11-16 .
