    Need

    Imagine spending days alone without seeing another human being and only the television for company? Sadly many older people will experience loneliness, poverty and vulnerability. Some people come to us when they’re not sure where to turn. They may be recovering from illness or bereavement, struggling to cope financially or cope in any one of a dozen of ways. At Age Connects Cardiff and the Vale they find practical help and support and people who care about the challenges they face.

    Solution

    The Community Volunteer Programme will deliver volunteer led activities that provide practical and emotional support for older people living across Cardiff and the Vale. The Programme will focus on: Information and support such as form filling, transport/shopping. The Community Volunteers help people to keep connected through visits and outings, befriending in residential care settings and charity champions promoting the organisation and supporting fundraising activities to sustain its work.

    » Individual characteristics of clients and volunteers will be considered so that they are able to get the help and support in a friendly environment.

    We can extract data from Charity Log on the numbers of people helped and what help they received. We will survey clients as to the difference the project has made for them.


  • Impact

    Impact

    The Community Volunteer Programme will be influenced and shaped by the needs of the older person and skills and experience offered by the volunteers. Once the teams are established we anticipate that they will be able to coordinate activities with minimal support from staff. Volunteers will benefit from in-house training. We will encourage a system of peer led support to maintain and develop volunteer ‘ownership’ of the Programme.

    Risk

    Possible risk of recruitment of appropriate volunteers for the project. However, Age Connects Cardiff and the Vale has been delivering services through volunteers for over 50 years. During this time, we have professionalised how we work with volunteers this includes having a rigorous recruitment process (including DBS check where appropriate), followed by induction and the offer of ongoing training; the allocation of a key paid member of staff responsible for supervising and supporting them.

    Reporting

    We will report on the achievements of the project via our website, and Facebook and through our quarterly meetings with supporters. We will also put an article in our LifeTimes magazine that is read by 3000 older people.

  • Background

    Location

    Age Connects Cardiff and the Vale helps thousands of local older people in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. Clients can age from 50+ but the vast majority of clients are over the age of 80. We help people from a diverse range of backgrounds in a variety of circumstances. We help when it's needed most, For many housebound older people their weekly volunteer visitor may be the only person they see to talk to and spend time with. For others we can help them stay connected with their community.

    Beneficiaries

    Lonely and isolated older people living in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. The needs that have been identified that older people come to us for include: support for people looking information and low level advocacy, support to go shopping or get shopping, help with transport to appointments and to visit family or friends who may be in hospital or moved to residential care, and companionship for those who do not have regular visitors both in the community and in residential care.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

    Over the year’s older people have come to us for a number of reasons, quite often because they didn’t know where else to go or they are at a point of crisis having no-one to turn to. Often it is not major issues and all they need is a little bit of help. But being able to take a holistic approach to supporting the person and being able to be responsive outside of service specifications can make a big difference. Our staff and volunteers are passionate people focused individuals who care.

    Samantha is a Volunteer Development Officer and has been with the charity for many years. Her personable nature ensures clients to feel at ease.
