Because You're Worth It

Reaching out to vulnerable, isolated older people and bringing them together for a lunch and some fun. Finding three things which could improve their lives and linking them with groups who can meet that need. We have tried this and its great so we want to find funds to do much more.

August 2017 - July 2018

Charity information: Council For Voluntary Service For St Alban's District

Council For Voluntary Service For St Alban's District
  • Need

Loneliness and isolation amongst vulnerable older people.
Changing attitudes of some older people who don't think they are worth it or don't want to 'make a fuss'.

Provide transport to bring people together for a shared lunch and a chance to talk and have some fun.
Find out what could change to improve peoples lives and link them to organisations who can meet those needs.
The simple act or reaching out, letting people know they are valued and giving them a chance to socialise together makes a huge difference in and of itself.
To then be able to solve some of their issues and help them get the support they need makes this project really effective

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To reduce loneliness and isolation amongst vulnerable older people and so improve their wellbeing

» Transport people to a central venue and provide lunch, fun and access to practical support and information to improve wellbeing

    What success will look like

    Number of people attending lunches
Number of issues identified and supported
    Feedback from participants

    Aim 2

To change the attitude of vulnerable older people so that they feel valued and access services

» Bring people together, give them our time, listen to them, take a genuine interest and understand their needs.

    What success will look like

    Changed behaviour of participants
    Feedback from participants
    Feedback from support organisations

  • Impact

A reduction in the level of isolation amongst participants and an improvement in their wellbeing.
Measured by the number of people accessing this service, their feedback about changes made as a result and follow up with participants.

Raised awareness of the issue and impact of loneliness amongst this group.
Measured by the number of agencies involved in or made aware of the project and the feedback they provide as well as the number of individuals who support and promote the project

Insufficient funding will prevent the continuation of the project.
Managed by careful expectation setting amongst participants.
Inadequate preparation, risk assessment or facilitation of the lunch events.
Managed by recruiting a high quality coordinator with relevant experience, supported by a clear project plan and trained volunteers

The project will provide a progress report at the half way stage and an impact report on conclusion

will pay to get 40 vulnerable people to a community lunch and link them to the support they need

I had never heard of these people who could help and I didn’t realise it would be so easy. I had a nice man come out to draft proof my doors and it has made such a difference and it really was free.
