Relational Support Work

east to west aim to place a Relational Support Worker (RSW) in as many schools as possible. Utilising the power of relationships, RSWs work alongside children, young people, families and school staff to 'bring hope' to difficult and challenging situations, helping those we support move on.

  • Need


    Relational Support Work as the name implies, is a highly relational approach to pastoral care and wellbeing; actively journeying with those we support for as long as is needed, fostering trust and growing confidence. RSW provides space; to reflect on where they're at in life; to think through what is holding them back as well and explore what is possible. It’s in this space that they are able to think, learn and reflect, enabling them to take ownership of their lives and be empowered to progress


    The overarching outcome for east to west is that every student encounters Hope and that Hope nurtures resilience, confidence and the opportunity to thrive, both personally and academically. At the heart of east to west is Relational Support Work (RSW) which is reflected in all of our work and which we define as: a long term commitment to actively journey with children, young people and families through the issues that they are addressing.

    What success will look like

    Personalised to each individual; Impact and Outcomes are measured via east to west’s Outcomes Framework, which enables those supported at the centre of the support provided.

  • Impact


    Schools will see changes in hard (attendance, academic progress and behaviour) and soft outcomes (attitude, aspiration and confidence) for each student and gain an overview of the entire year’s impact through regular reports, outcomes and statistics.
    School students engaging with an RSW can increase their attendance by 25%; students engaging with a RSW can significantly increase their positive behaviour scores. The RSW will operate in and through the schools Safeguarding Policy.


    The average cost of putting a Relational Support Worker into a school for 24.5 hours a week (equivalent to 3 full school days) is £21,670. Given the current funding challenges faced by schools (who part fund these roles), the biggest risk to success is finances.


    We report to our schools using infographics which highlight the impact of the work being done as well as highlighting sessions and hours delivered face to face and in group work settings.

    We also share information with donors through our Facebook page, website and twice yearly newsletters.

  • Background


    We are based in schools across north Surrey and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.


    According to the 2011 census (covering the Spelthorne area where we work with 5 schools) there were 15,636 children and young people between the ages of 5 and 19, with roughly 6,300 attending local secondary schools (11-16). Of these 6,300 students, east to west supported over 900 through 1:1 and group work interventions.

    In total during the 2015/16 academic year we supported 1,428 children, young people, families and staff and indications are that this number will increase during this year.

    Why Us?

    Established 20 years ago, we've supported over 20,000 children, young people, families and staff across numerous projects (homeless provision, crime prevention, community youth work, schools work, counselling). We've built up a level of experience and expertise that allows us to deliver amazing standards of work, interventions and solutions to thousands of people.
