East Africa Crisis Appeal

In South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia, drought and conflict have left 16 million people on the brink of starvation and in need of immediate food assistance. DEC member charities are on the ground delivering life-saving assistance in all affected countries.

Ongoing crisis

  • Need

A combination of drought and conflict has left over 16 million people across four countries in East Africa in need of humanitarian assistance. The UN declared famine in parts of Unity State of South Sudan on 20 February 2017. People in Somalia and parts of Kenya and Ethiopia are also suffering already because of malnutrition. The number of people at risk of starvation is unprecedented for the East Africa region and cholera outbreaks across the region are exacerbating the situation.

All thirteen DEC member charities are already on the ground delivering life-saving aid. They are ready to upscale their humanitarian support once increased funding is received.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide immediate humanitarian assistance for millions at risk of starvation in East Africa.

» Provision of urgently needed food.
» Improving access to water and sanitation.
» Provision of seeds, tools, fishing and agricultural inputs, cash and food vouchers.
    » Provision of medical care.

    What success will look like

    Lives saved across East Africa.

  • Impact

Scaling up of humanitarian assistance will prevent people from dying and fight the potentially long-lasting consequences of famine which can mean that families have to rebuild their livelihoods and communities for many years.

People are already dying in South Sudan, Somalia and neighbouring Ethiopia and Kenya because of malnutrition. The next stage is that the number of deaths will increase exponentially unless life-saving investment is made now. There is a need to both step up the immediate humanitarian response to save lives, and to work to prevent a catastrophe in the months ahead.

The World Food Programme reports that 40% of the South Sudanese population (4.9 million) need food urgently, and close to 100,000 are in imminent danger of death. Somalia has declared a state of emergency with around 336,000 acutely malnourished children facing the threat of starvation. In Kenya, the number of people living without adequate food supplies has risen to 2.7 million, and in Ethiopia 5.6 million people require assistance. In total over 16 million people are affected.
