  • Need

The scale of this crisis could be catastrophic. In Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda 16 million people are at risk of starvation. In South Sudan 100,000 people are already facing famine.

As families are skipping meals, women and girls are the most vulnerable as they eat last and least. They are also put increased risk of assault as drought means they often walk an average of 50km to collect water for their families.

CARE is on the ground in all five countries providing urgently needed food, clean water, emergency nutrition for mothers and children and protection for women and girls.

For the long term CARE is providing agricultural support for farmers and livelihoods to help families re-build their lives stronger for the future.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Providing emergency relief and long term assistance to affected families in East Africa

» CARE is providing emergency food, water and shelter assistance, protection for women and girls and support on nutrition, health and agriculture.

    What success will look like

Success will be no further declarations of famine in the region, minimising the impact on women and girls and setting them and their families on a path to a more resilient future.

  • Impact

Long term changes will include more resilient farming methods being used in Ethiopia and sustainable water sources in Kenya.

In some parts of the region aid workers are still challenged to reach people in need due to the ongoing instability and the security threats by armed groups. CARE works closely with local partners and communities to monitor risk and ensure that it's staff are taking appropriate protective measures.

We will provide updates in our twice yearly newsletter, on our website and by email. If you have any specific questions about our response, please call our Supporter Care team on 020 7091 6100.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

CARE has worked in the region for over 50 years. Over this time the organisation has developed strong links with local communities and organisations, which puts us in a position to act quickly and flexibly to ensure that emergency food supplies and other assistance will continue to be provided to those most vulnerable.

CARE puts women and girls at the centre of everything we do because we know that we cannot overcome poverty until all people have equal rights and opportunities.
