CAFOD East Africa Crisis Appeal

Millions of families face starvation across East Africa. Your help is needed so that we can urgently provide food, water, healthcare and sanitation to people in desperate need.
Together we must do all that we can to save lives.

We are on the ground getting aid to people now, and our long-term projects in the region mean that we will be there to help communities recover.

  • Need

Across East Africa, millions of families face starvation because of drought, lack of food, and civil war. The UN has described this as the largest humanitarian crisis in more than 70 years.

16 million people face severe hunger in South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya. More than 800,000 children under five are severely malnourished.

CAFOD partners are on the ground working hard to get aid to people in danger of starvation. Please donate today and help provide food and water.

£500,000 Emergency relief Giving people in desperate need emergency food and water, healthcare and sanitation.
  • Background

South Sudan - In South Sudan 4.9 million people - more than 40% of the country’s population - urgently need food. The crisis has been exacerbated by conflict and economic collapse.
Somalia - 50% of the population do not have enough to eat. Donations to our appeal will help people here access food.
Ethiopia - 5.6 million people are affected and in need of food, water or sanitation
Kenya - more than 2 million people in the north are affected by a drought that's been declared a national disaster.

We are getting urgent aid to those who need it the most.
People are already dying in South Sudan, Somalia and neighbouring Ethiopia and Kenya because of malnutrition. Donations to this appeal will provide food, clean water, healthcare and sanitation to the most vulnerable people.

Matthew is CAFOD's Head of Emergency Response, overseeing our response to the crisis.

“Hunger is evident in the thinness of children, and the way clothes hang from the bodies of people already suffering. Now is not the time for the international community to walk away. They must sit up and notice, and together we must do all that we can to save lives.”
