Summer at Somerville
Somerville will run a whole host of fun weekday daytime activities, 4 evening youth clubs and 3 trips per week during the summer holidays for ages 5-18 in the New Cross area of South East London. A healthy lunch will be included.
July 2017 - August 2017
Charity information: Somerville Youth & Play Provision
Local children and young people in the New Cross area need stuff to do and places to go in the summer holidays. We live in a crowded urban area with busy roads and we want to give children and young people opportunities to do positive fun stuff, rather than hang out on the streets all day.
We are open every weekday during the school holidays providing a whole host of acitivities at our adventure playground site, and we take kids off on trips to experience new things and see new places.
Provide fun activities and trips for school aged children from New Cross during the summer holiday.
Activities» Outdoor activities: adventure playground, multi-sports, cycle rides, bike maintenance, food growing, roller skating, carpentry workshops, den building
» Indoor activities: art and craft, cooking, IT, youth clubs, table tennis and snooker, dance workshops, music workshops,
» Trips to new places; ice rinks, theme parks, beaches, National Trust properties, caves, sailing centre, Go Ape, museums, camping,
What success will look like
We register all attendees on our online database and can report on all attendence of activities / trips during this time.
350 children and young people:
- build new friendships
- grow in self-confidence and self-esteem
- gain new skills
- learn new things and 'broaden their horizons'
- have more fun
We will ask participants to complete feedback forms at the end of activities which are stored on our online database.
Staff shortage e.g. due to illness. We have a number of local volunteers who could be drawn on to help e.g. during trips. We may have to limit the numbers on site if we have staff shortages though this rarely happens.
Oversubscription to activities. We would run popular activities and trips repeated times and limit the number of times an individual can do a particular trip or activity to give others a chance.
Based on our experience, lack of uptake will not be a risk.
We will provide a report at the end of the project stating the number of activities and their attendees, an overview of the demographics of attendees and a summary of feedback gained. We will include case studies and some photos.

34% of children in Lewisham live in poverty which is the 18th worst Local Authority in the
UK (End Child Poverty Report October 2014) and New Cross is one of the most deprived wards in the borough (IMD 2011).
Somerville has operated here since 1971 in response to local need. We are a young, ethnically diverse population and 95% of Somerville's attendees live in social housing.

Parents will also benefit from knowing their children are in a safe place if they have to be at work during the school holidays.
We have been running holiday playschemes since 1971 and operate as a youth and play club for 50 weeks of the year, with over 1200 children and young people registered.
We have a team of qualified and experienced youth and play workers, a fantastic adventure playground and brand new two storey building, plus an outdoor sports pitch and our own minibus.
