Albany Young Creatives

To give 50 young people a year a platform for learning, development, skills and training through collaboration with others and being supported to design, create and execute project ideas and plans from start to finish.

  • Need


    Youth unemployment; which is a particularly big problem at the moment specifically within the London borough of Lewisham. Lewisham has a high BAME population and, while culturally very positive, the community faces much discrimination, especially young people in Lewisham who fall under this category. The majority (80+%) of the young people we work with are from BAME groups, who find further employment very difficult, if not impossible.


    We have developed a sustained funded programme that offers a platform for learning, development, skills and training in an exciting venue that provides young people with a place to develop drive, ambition and passion for the things that are important to them. Through doing so we support these young people to find employment and make a positive change in their community. We believe in young people’s potential to change their own lives and shape the world they live in.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    To give young people transferable skills for the workplace


    » Through leadership, project and event management and shadowing members of staff for various projects such as performances, bespoke events and more!

    What success will look like

    In terms of data, information on successful employment and opportunities for development internally can be measured.

    Aim 2

    Providing them with opportunities to gain a real hands-on experience in a professional environment


    » Developing their citizenship and leadership skills by becoming Youth Ambassadors, peer mentors, board members and advocates in a real work setting

    What success will look like

    We will track participants after six months and then a year to see whether they have gone into the further education or employment. This will assess the longer term impact

    Aiding them in becoming active and engaged citizens with better life-equipped skills for work-life


    » Access to inspirational role models/mentors which will allow them to gain insight into a range of careers through work placements, internships etc.
    » Give them access to networking and developmental events

    What success will look like

    Participants, tutors and members of The Young Creatives will be asked to evaluate their experience and directly into how the project re-shapes and continues to develop over time

    Aim 4

    Support them in developing a community-minded project from concept to completion


    » We will teach them budgeting, finances, logistics, planning, production, operations, marketing, programming and event management

    What success will look like

    Through quantitative evaluation, individuals will give details through registration and monitoring forms to ensure that the project is being delivered to the intended beneficiaries

  • Impact


    The young people will become immersed in the programme as they start to develop ideas around becoming entrepreneurial and enterprising. They may start to think about ways that they could raise some funds for the group through events and crowd funding themselves. In an ideal world, we would have a similar programme for 13-17 year olds and progression routes into the fully-fledged programme for 18-25 year olds with mentoring and progression routes from one to another.




    We will widely share our progress with partners and funders via email as well as on social media and our website; we have done this in the past to promote the programme too.

  • Background


    Lewisham is the 11th most deprived borough in London with high Indices of Multiple Deprivation; more than 25% of pupils are eligible for free school meals, and 40% are living in one parent households. There is a high rate of unemployment in the area (in 2004 it was 6.1% compared to the 3.1% national average); knowledge economy is below average by national standards with a below average number of pupils achieving 5 or more GCSEs at grade A-C.


    Our primary beneficiaries - 50 Young people directly involved in the programme each year.
    Our secondary beneficiaries - audiences and other people who will participate with the group and attend events. As part of a wider reach, approximately 1000 secondary beneficiaries will engage with the Young Creatives in some form each year.
