Fit and Fed: Filling the Holiday Gap

This summer we focus on Brent, Lambeth, Wandsworth and Westminster, providing free holiday activity for 10-18 year olds, which includes a nutritious daily meal. We aim to grow these community organisations to host more holiday programmes in the future. Together we can end the holiday hunger crisis!

  • Need


    We are responding to the Holiday Gap.
    The gap is the cumulative impact on children of school holidays spent:
    • without enough good food, (no free school meals);
    • without enough physical activity, (too few free activity programmes);
    • with too little positive social interaction (kids stay at home – often minding siblings).
    Research shows that by the start of the school year the gap has widened the differential in readiness to learn between many poor children and their more affluent peers.


    Our project will bring together 12 community organisations to each provide for about 50 children a day:
    i. 4 hours a day of Health Enhancing Physical Activity: reducing inactivity.
    ii. At least one nutritious meal a day: reducing hunger.
    iii. Training for local volunteers in food hygiene and modelling positive behaviours.
    We will support the programme providers to develop a sustainability plan.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    To narrow the holiday gap for children in deprived parts of Brent, Lambeth Wandsworth & Westminster


    » We will support and train, coaches, project leaders, and volunteers to provide fun physical activity and sport sessions in free holiday programmes.
    » Each day there will be nutritious food provided for free. This will be lunch and possibly breakfast too. We will introduce ‘new’ food to children.
    » To provide quality, fun and rewarding volunteering opportunities for children, teenagers and grown-ups from the neighbourhood.

    What success will look like

    Collect attendance data and track attendees against Free School Meals and deprivation data.
    Case study the impact on families and local neighbourhoods.

    Aim 2

    To capacity build community organisations so they can carry on narrowing the gap.


    » We will establish sustainable, cost reducing relationships between surplus food providers and the community clubs in the 4 boroughs.
    » We will train the staff and volunteers in our community clubs in food hygiene, food preparation and how to deliver a fun sports activity programme.
    » We will recruit and develop new volunteers from within the local community (including the parents of the children), to help deliver the project.
    » We will plan the sustainability of the offer and create local fundraising plans.

    What success will look like

    Numbers of:
    New relationships created between providers and surplus food providers
    Volunteers trained and the number of volunteers recruited
    Sustainability plans produced.

  • Impact


    More children keeping active. Our monitoring tool records frequency of attendance.
    Better relationships reported between community organisations and surplus food outlets.
    Volunteers locally recruited and trained in food hygiene, and providers more confident in preparing food. A commitment to delivering meals with holiday programmes in the future.
    Children introduced to nutritious new types of food, their parents (volunteers) encouraged to introduce at home. Recorded in case studies.


    1. Holiday activities are not attractive to local community.
    Our providers are rooted in their communities with strong local networks, able to effectively co-produce the activities.
    2. Unable to establish effective relationships with surplus food providers.
    We are in dialogue with Eat and FareShare who are keen to support our project.
    3. Unable to recruit enough volunteers.
    Our providers have already recruited some volunteers who can be trained in the lead up to the holidays.


    We will produce an end of project report to send to our donors and utilise our website and Facebook site and twitter to demonstrate the progress of the project.
    We will also give donors the opportunity to visit one of the holiday activity programmes to meet the volunteers and children involved.

  • Background


    The 12 projects run from community premises in deprived areas where there is little or no alternative provision.
    Nationally free school meal usage stands at 15.9 % for primary schools and 13.1% for secondary. In Brent the figures for primary are 27.3% & secondary 22.6%,Lambeth 37.3 % & 37.4%, Wandsworth 27.5% & 24.1% and in Westminster 35.2% & 29.7 % .
    These shocking figures demonstrate the scale of holiday hunger issues children will face when FSM’s are removed during the school holidays


    There are 4 sets of beneficiaries:
    The 600 children who attend our holiday activity programmes will become more active in the holiday period and receive a daily nutritious meal.
    Families under financial pressure, who normally are unable to fund their children’s involvement in often expensive holiday activities.
    Volunteers who receive training to develop their skills and the opportunity to then put these new skills into practice.
    Community organisations that develop sustainability plans.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

    The 12 providers are rooted in their neighbourhood: their local insight and credibility means they are best placed to deliver this project. They are already in contact with many of the target children and families and work with the schools.
    The StreetGames network of community deliverers has significant experience of working together to deliver volunteer training; the monitoring and evaluation of complex, multi-site projects and ensuring minimum operating standards are met.

    Jane is the founding Chief Executive of StreetGames. She is ‘hands-on’ with Fit and Fed and chairs the partnership’s steering group.

    Project Co-Ordinator

    Provides co-ordination across the 12 holiday activity programmes in the 4 boroughs, supports community providers on a day to day basis.
