Tackling avoidable blindness among the poorest of the poor in Africa
The eye care needs in Africa are huge. Figures vary, but of the estimated 6.9 million who are blind, around 52% have cataract. With current estimates of global blindness at around 37 million people, Africa therefore accounts for around 18% of all blindness worldwide. Over half of these people could have their sight restored with a simple operation.
