Christmas Community Activities for Older People

We wish to offer an extra special Christmas Activity to older people who may not have family nearby, some may live in isolation and some are forgotten.
Our activity will be fun & sociable and delivered by our community. Each individual member, and his or her needs, is at the heart of what we do.

December 2016 - January 2017

  • Need

Older people are particularly vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness owing to loss of friends and family, mobility or income. Some older people find it hard to communicate because of physical factors such as suffering from a stroke, dementia, hearing loss or limited physical ability.

Social isolation and loneliness have a detrimental effect on health and wellbeing. They miss family and friends, who they can no longer get to or perhaps have passed away. Rotherfield is a rural location.

We let our participants make their own choices and do all we can to be as supportive as we are able. We introduce new activities to older people, and an introduction to make new friends. We offer a daily programme of activities that includes trips out, making new friends, social gatherings, learning new skills, clubs, exercise classes, therapies, signposting, befriending, a volunteer driver’s scheme and more. Our RSM Centre is open every weekday for people to drop in, to have a coffee

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To engage older people in the community to join our family with Christmas Activities.

» A Christmas party with a small gift for all older people with entertainment
» To encourage older people to continue to come to the community centre which is open 5 days a week. Monday at the village hall - talks, coffee & cake

    What success will look like

By how many older people attend the Christmas activity.
We want to increase our regular older people attendance by 25%

  • Impact

More older people will attend community activities/events and feel welcome

We offer support and encouragement, freedom and intellectual diversions and a life free from daytime TV’

To bring the community together, caring for older people who are struggling to cope with old age, ailments and bereavement.

RSM has many skills – we will offer friendship, befriending, financial advice and support during difficult situations.

Transport is a concern for older people living in isolation. We will operate a taxi service and volunteers will collect and return older people wishing to attend.
If we do not meet our target we will need to still offer a Christmas activity but not on so many days to include all the older people.

We will send a newsletter and thank on our social media sites and website. For those where we have an address a personal letter will be sent from the CEO. A telephone call, if we have a number will be made as a personal thank you.

  • Background

Rotherfield is a village and civil parish in the Wealden District of East Sussex. It is one of the largest parishes in East Sussex. The River Rother, which drains much of the county and discharges at Rye Harbour, has its source on the south side of the hill on which Rotherfield village is built.

The population of Rotherfield as a whole is older than the average. The population is also older than the East Sussex average, making Rotherfield an older person location.

Older people in the Rother area and immediate villages. Older people that live in isolation and are lonely or who simply wish to be part of their community. Everyone is welcome.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We consulted with the very people we help, a questionnaire was given and we asked whether we are meeting their needs, what else we could do and have we got it right. We have learnt from our work, to ask the older people more frequently what else we can do and how can we improve our services. This has given us better results and a wider programme and engaged older people further afield from rural areas.

The reason I am a volunteer of Rotherfield St Martin is that I can see the help and support it gives to so many people.
