Psychological assistance at Casa Jimmy's need

Helping disadvantaged children with emotional and psychological needs benefits them greatly. By having access to a psychologist it benefits self-esteem and re enforces their potential to wider society. We employ 1 Psychologist to identify the needs and support up to 120 kids aged from 7 to 17.

  • Need

Rio is the home of many young people who suffer from the effects of extreme poverty. In particular, their life chances are frequently harmed by social stigmatization, poor education, low self-esteem/expectations and a lack of encouragement and support at home. This makes it hard for them and their communities to escape the vicious cycle of poverty and low achievement and to fulfil their potential, and makes the apparently quick and easy rewards of criminal/gang related activity hard to resist.

The Psychologist at Casa Jimmy project supports kids with traumatic backgrounds and show them inspiring alternatives to the crime that many disaffected young people are drawn into.

The psychologist works towards identifying the problems faced by our beneficiaries and their families, give them necessary support and make referrals to professionals and services available in their local community.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To support the kids with problematic backgrounds who may not receive adequate encouragement at home.

» Help with self esteem issues to allow the kids to go forward and make a better future for themselves.
» That the kids are able to learn without personal stress and anguish. To enable them to excel and concentrate in educational areas.

    What success will look like

Success will be seen by the children progressing in their education. This can be seen in school grades. Our progress is publicised in regular newsletters, website and social media

    Aim 2

Help who has problems at home or starts to become involved with local drug trafficking

» Having a resident psychologist is invaluable in spotting warning signs in the children early on, and improve the kids emotional balance preventively.

    What success will look like

Success will be seen by the children progressing in their education. This can be seen in school grades. Our progress is publicised in regular newsletters, website and social media

    Aim 3

Finding the root of challenging behaviour using a range of methods to assist our kids' development

» Methods include Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) talking therapy that can help manage problems by a positive change to thinking and behaviour

    What success will look like

Reinforcing the belief that through education their lifestyle situation can be changed for the better. The children and teenagers will improve their school attendance and grades.

    Aim 4

Support with Post Traumatic Stress disorder and other associated after effects.

» To give help, encouragement and support to kids who have been witness to violent and traumatic events.
» Refer the kids and the family to a network of services and training .

    What success will look like

The children and teenagers will improve their school attendance and grades.

  • Impact

All those who passed through the program are success stories in their own way. By attending Casa Jimmy they are given a helping hand and the chance of a decent education against the odds.
    The effects will:
    1. inspire the local community though the positive outcomes of the kids
    2. give a healthier and safer place to live in the future for the kids and their family
    3. give the kids who have attended Casa Jimmy a lifelong impression. They will be better individuals with wider prospects in life.

The main risk that we foresee is not to generating enough income to be able to pay the Psychologists salary and employment tax. If this is the case then hours will be cut and the education and wellbeing of the children could suffer.
In the past we continued the projects with reduced hours with funds we had available.

In the absence of specific request for feedback, we will report to donors as to progress on a regular basis by email by social media and newsletters. If donors require any other form of reporting we will do all we can to meet their request.

  • Background

Casa Jimmy is located in the Santa Teresa district of Rio. In the early 20th century it was a very smart part of Rio but its wealth has since declined substantially. Now, whilst it has a reputation as a bohemian enclave in Rio, two of its main features are some notorious favelas and the extreme poverty of many of its residents.

The primary beneficiaries will be the kids involved in the project. Other beneficiaries will be the wider Rio community as they learn more about our work, and about the talent, energy and potential of kids who are written-off by many wealthier Brazilians.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Casa Jimmy opened in 1998, and has successfully held a number of similar events in the past. We are well known in Rio, and Task Brasil has links with local schools and local organizations that will help us deliver the event.
