Much needed Sensory Room

Skillshop day centre is sadly missing a sensory room. Having a sensory room would massively benefit our centre. The special room will be designed to develop a person's sense, usually through various lighting, calming music, and sensory objects.

  • Need


    A sensory room would be used as a therapy room for adults with learning disabilities. This room would also be used as a relaxing quiet area providing space for people to relax and control all the elements. Not only would the sensory room encourage people to have control, allowing anyone with any degree of disability to change and influence their environment in a positive way - it would provide an overall therapeutic atmosphere.


    The benefits of having a sensory room would be endless. It would be one room that would provide a safe haven for people to rest. Many people may like to simply lie down and relax while others may engage in the interactive elements. The room will encourage hand and eye coordination and improve the development of social and language skills.

    What success will look like

    We will host an open day and invite all our donors to come and trial out the new sensory room.

  • Impact


    The changes will be very large. We would be able to offer a calming, relaxing area for adults to go with staff and relax if they are simply having a bad day. The room could be used after an adult has suffered a seizure, giving them the privacy and relaxation to recover. We can adapt our activity rota to offer therapeutic session in the sensory room and most of all we can excel that little bit more in providing excellent care throughout the day for adults with various learning disabilities.


    We will have a risk management plan in place. Controlling potential risks will involve looking out for identified, residual and secondary risks, identifying any new risks, taking quick corrective action when a risk materializes, planning further preventive actions when we identify a trend of a new risk, and measure the effectiveness of risk responses. We will do everything in our power to prevent any risks from occurring.


    We will be flexible in our feedback. We could use emails, social media, letters etc. We will ask which method of communication they prefer.

  • Background


    Halifax is a minster town in the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale in West Yorkshire, England. The town has been a centre of woollen manufacture from the 15th century onward, originally dealing through the Piece Hall. Halifax is known for Mackintosh's chocolate and toffee products including Rolo and Quality Street. The Halifax Bank and Yorkshire Bank were also founded in Halifax. Dean Clough, one of the largest textile factories in the world.


    We currently have forty three ladies and gentlemen who use our centre on a weekly basis. We are contracted to local Council and we are only permitted to allocate twenty individuals daily. Planning has just been applied to increase our daily number to thirty. This will open more doors for other vulnerable adults to come and use our fantastic sensory room.

    Why Us?

    Established in September 2005, Skillshop is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee. The aim of Skillshop is to provide specialised training for adults with learning disabilities in a caring environment. The objectives are to improve people's self-esteem, confidence and personal development and break down social isolation. People will have more fulfilling lives, be less reliant on staff and have developed some independent social networks and friendships.
